Postgraduate Research Experience Survey - PRES 2020
The annual national Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) gives us the opportunity to benchmark the BU PGR experience across the sector, to recognize our achievements and to invest our energies in areas where we might have done better. PRES ran from March to May 2020, with a response rate of 54% (423 respondents).
Dean of Postgraduate Research, Professor Andrew Hiscock, responded to the PRES survey, expressing his thanks 'to all the Bangor postgraduate researchers, the BU Student Engagement Unit team and Doctoral School team as well as all the PGR Directors, PGR Leads and PGR supervisors throughout the institution for making this such a successful PRES survey for 2020. We have already been holding review meetings at school and college level and with the Student Union. These review sessions will continue with postgraduate representatives and focus groups led by school PGR Leads. Naturally, we wish to make the very most of our areas where we have made significant gains on previous years and continue to listen sensitively where there are any areas of concern. Despite the challenging nature of 2020 for researchers and supervisors, this year's PRES survey clearly indicates a very gratifying growth in satisfaction and, equally importantly, of expectation regarding the graduate experience at Bangor'.
In the 2020 PRES survey at Bangor there were some particularly pleasing headline achievements to be noted: :
- 1stin the global benchmark for the themes of Supervision, Responsibilities, Research Skills and Progression for Disabled Demographic
- 1st in the global benchmark for the theme of Research Culture for Distance Learners (in terms of delivery)
- 1st in the global benchmark for the theme Responsibilities for STEM
- 1st in the global benchmark for the theme Professional Development for the Demographic BAME
BU scored in the top ten of participating institutions for six survey themes (globally in the top 25%) and we are in the top twenty of participating institutions for two survey themes (above the average but below the top 25%). Overall satisfaction amongst our BU Postgraduate Researchers is amongst the highest in the sector at 83% (sector average 81%) and we rank in the top ten globally (10 out of 38 institutions). Bangor Postgraduate Researchers were most positive about Professional Development, scoring 5% above the global benchmark.
Elsewhere, it was noted that 73% of our Postgraduate Researchers stated that the institution valued their feedback, 12% above the global benchmark. Such results can probably be attributed to the PRES action planning institutional and College / School events and subsequent interventions now embedded across the institution on an annual basis. As ever, the Doctoral School welcomes all feedback on the graduate experience at Bangor, so don't hesitate to contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org
