Engage — lectures in engineering, computing and design
All welcome!
Join us on Wednesday the 15th November, at 12 p.m. in MLT, Dean Street where we will have a special lecture from Dr John Story on "FabLAB, The Why, The How and The What".
Like computing before it, digital fabrication is on a journey from highly specialist to ubiquitous. The fabLAB is a resource that lets people make 'almost' anything in one place. During this talk we'll take a look at the history of the fabLAB Network, motivations behind it, the current state and future plans coming out of the founders at MIT.
Infrastructure for making is one thing, having the people equipped to use it is another. We'll take a quick look at the Fab Academy, the globally delivered qualification headed up by Prof. Gershenfeld of MIT. Followed by the influence that could have as we embed that delviery within the school. Finally we'll take a look at some case studies. Before asking: What would you make?
John Story is an alumni of the School, graduating a long, long, time ago from the MEng course. With industrial experience ranging from work at Nortel Networks RF Lab on the Harlow campus, to years of writing software for local firms, John rejoined the University to support local enterprise via the INTEREG funded TESLA project. Leading on from that, being a part of the team that founded the fabLAB at Pontio, which has supported dozens of local firms and hundreds of individuals to complete an incredibly varied array of projects. He also teaches our Prototyping and Fabrication module.
