Overall aims and purpose
This module is key in setting a foundation for understanding the social, psychological, and cultural influences that affect health. The module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the concept of health, and the determinants that influence and impact on people's health and well-being. The module also aims to develop student’s knowledge of key sociological and psychological concepts to enable an understanding of health behaviours and health behaviour change.
This module explores the social, psychological, and cultural influences affecting people's health and health-related behaviours. Content focuses on: Definitions of health and well-being; Behaviour Change - Psychological Perspectives; Behaviour Change - Sociological Perspectives; Theories and Models of Behaviour Change; Social Determinants of Health; Social Inequalities.

Focussing on the health-related topic selected in Part I, critically discuss the social and psychological factors that influence health behaviour and health behaviour change. [2000 words].
|REPORT||Role of the mass media sources in the construction of public beliefs||
Report on the role that mass media sources have in the construction of public beliefs and attitudes about health-related issues.
Select two non-scientific/non-academic ‘media’ articles that focus on the same health issue for a specific population (and setting, if relevant). The articles need to be from two different (or contrasting) sources (for example, a newspaper article from a ‘broadsheet’, and the other from a ‘tabloid’). Write a 2000 word report that includes the following:
-A summary of the content of the two articles (200 words). -Who wrote the articles? What is their background and training, and assess the relevance (100 words). -Compare and contrast the focus of the news and information provided (for example, the health issue or problem, the cause, the impact of this, prevention and/or treatments (if applicable), the factors that influence health, links to policy, social inequalities etc.)? Is important information omitted? What sources are used to inform each article, and how do these influence what is reported? (500 words).
Critically evaluate each article by assessing and evaluating how health, wellbeing and behaviour, and the factors that affect these, are or are not discussed in the articles. Areas to consider also include: how the news is framed; its quality; the potential these articles have in influencing the public perceptions of the risks and/or benefits relating to the identified health issue (1000 words).
-A conclusion that summarises potential impact of the media on the public’s perception of health (200 words)
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Lectures are supported with additional materials and resources that are available on a Blackboard site. Students are also encouraged to: use library and multi-media resources (such as the Internet, newspapers, radio, television) and engage in Blackboard Group discussions. Students are encouraged to use electronic learning resources. Relevant lecture material, reading lists, and a list of relevant Internet resources are available on the course specific Blackboard site; students are also asked to add any relevant or useful material to this module site.
Online Discussion Board Seminars: Students will be required to lead and engage in weekly Discussion Boards
Tutorials/Group Discussions: These will facilitate the learning of underlying concepts, either as group or individually, either face-to-face, via email, Skype, or through other accessible formats (for example, telephone).
Lecture sessions and workshops designed to enhance knowledge and understanding. These will enable students to apply knowledge and understanding to their own contexts, as relevant.
