Highlights from the School of Computer Science and Engineering 2023 Summer Graduation

With favourable weather and joyous excitement, students, staff, and parents celebrated together at the 2023 School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering graduation ceremony that took place on the 12th of July 2023.

The 2023 graduation ceremony for the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering held on the 12th of July, was a memorable occasion. The day started with the school’s celebratory lunch and award giving ceremony. Dr Iestyn Pierce, head of school, hosted the event. He said

It was a pleasure to host our 2023 graduation ceremony. The sun shone, the rain held off, and we all had a fantastic day. These events provide an opportunity to recognize the dedication, perseverance, and accomplishments of the graduating students. It is a fantastic time for students to reflect on their academic journey and celebrate their achievements alongside their peers, families, and staff.

The Wednesday afternoon ceremony was one of ten summer 2023 ceremonies that the University held. All graduating students from specialisms in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering and Product Design, along with all postgraduate and research students from Natural Sciences were awarded their qualifications. At the start of the formal ceremony, students, parents, and friends gathered in the grand hall. The Prichard-Jones Hall is the University's main hall and is the location for some lectures and extraordinary events such as concerts, the Summer Ball and Graduation. The Vice Chancellor, Chancellor, distinguished guests, and academic staff gathered in the robing room before processing along the aisle.

In the ceremony, two honorary degrees were awarded. Bangor alumna and plant geneticist, Dr Tina Barsby OBE, renowned for her scientific achievements and experience in the agricultural crop sector, received an honorary degree for public service. Dr Salamatu Jidda-Fada, who was a research fellow at the Centre for Evidence-Based Conservation, and visiting researcher in the School of Natural Sciences, received an honorary degree for services to education.

At the graduation ceremony the university also awarded a prestigious university teaching fellowship to Professor Jonathan C. Roberts at the school, recognising his excellence in teaching and learning at the school. Jonathan said,

I am deeply honoured to receive this prestigious teaching fellowship. In my work I have the extraordinary opportunity every day to merge my passion for teaching and research, specifically in the captivating topic of visual computing and visualisation. I am honoured to have these amazing opportunities, and an incredible platform to make a meaningful impact in education, and I am looking forward to further innovating in teaching and research.

After the formal ceremony staff and students gathered for the official photograph. Dr Iestyn Pierce said “It is always great to have the official photograph. It brings all graduates and staff together, and it is brilliant to see the colourful robes that everyone wears. There was a real buzz of excitement, as everyone gathered for the photograph. Again, I wish our graduates much success in their next steps.”
