As a practical person my interests are on the applied side of engineering – how can we use technology to solve the problems that society faces. I am a passionate advocate for all forms of renewable energy. My research interests are in the fields of applied photovoltaics, embedded microelectronics and wireless sensor networks. I am particularly interested in practical applications using organic photovoltaics for solar energy harvesting. My latest research involves the use of artificial neural networks for data forecasting, based on data gathered by Internet of Things (IoT) wireless sensors.

Photovoltaics
We have an outdoor solar photovoltaic (PV) monitoring system on the roof of the department, which is used for testing PV modules fabricated from next generation materials: organic, perovskite etc. We are always looking for new materials to work with. Our latest work has involved testing large area organic PV modules. We are also investigating the use of solar cells for indoor energy harvesting, specifically in the area of wireless sensors.
Internet of Things (IoT)
We are working on developing wireless sensors for many different applications, working with partners across the spectrum, from agri-tech to social housing. We are looking at developing edge computing applications, where much of the computing effort takes place on the sensor, reducing the amount of data being transmitted. We are also looking at developing machine learning techniques to make use of the large amounts of data that IoT devices generate. We are always looking for more applications for this technology.
Data Forecasting
We are working on various data science applications, especially in the area of data forecasting; using past data to predict future performance. As the amount of data created by IoT devices increases it becomes harder to make full use of it and this is where data forecasting using artificial neural networks comes into its own. We are always looking for more opportunities to utilise these techniques.

- Cutting-edge photonics research at Bangor University
At Bangor University's school of computer science and electronic engineering (SEECS), cutting-edge research is being pursued in fields of photonics and optoelectronics, including optical super-resolution imaging, sensing, solar energy, laser manufacturing, nano laser, micro robots, 5G communication and IoT.
For example, the school is the birth places of the widely publicised 'spider silk superlens' technology, which uses spider silks found in nature as superlens to increase the imaging resolution of optical microscopes by 2-4 times.
The school is actively engaged in developing new applications of edge computing deployed in North Wales and enhancing the reliability of solar cells, and electronic sensors in the industry.
In this webinar, Drs. James Wang, Noel Bristow and Jeff Kettle from the school will present:
• Laser-based Micro/nano-manufacturing for industry (engraving, colour marking, texturing, cleaning, security labelling) - James
• Optical superlens and nanoscope and their applications – James
• New applications of IoT and edge computing deployed in North Wales (Noel)
• Enhancing the reliability of photonic and electronic products (Jeff)
