Confucius Institute Legal English Summer School
A bespoke Legal English Summer School was organised in collaboration with CUPL and ran by Michael McGarvey, an expert in the field of Legal English from the London School of Economics. Mike McGarvey commented: ‘It was a great pleasure to participate in the first CUPL- Bangor University legal English programme. In just one week, the participants made a huge amount of progress in understanding and using English for law and how it is applied in the English system. Despite the online medium, there was a good rapport; and it was great to see such enthusiasm with lots of questions from enquiring and willing students. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the assessments and what we achieved in such a short time, and I very much look forward to the next opportunity to collaborate with CUPL.’
Thirty-eight students took part in the five days intense summer, which included lectures, group exercises, and course work on a range of legal topics, amongst which were: company law, case analysis, types of arguments and persuasion and collocations. Lina Davitt, the Director of the Confucius Institute, said: ‘The aim was to provide a unique opportunity for the students to conceptualise and expand on their subject expertise, develop new transferable skills, improve their legal English spoken language, and find out more about Bangor University. We are delighted to receive exceptionally positive feedback, and we are looking forward to expanding the length of the next year Summer School.’
LI Dandan, the Deputy Director of the International office at China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), remarked: ‘The organisation of the Legal English Summer School was excellent! This was the first time a Confucius Institute from one of our partner universities utilised overseas resources to enhance the international views of CUPL students and provided valuable opportunities to critically assess case studies and gain practical experience of legal arguments and persuasion. This was a new approach to innovation and levelling up of the Confucius Institute, which facilitates further collaboration between universities.
