Owen is a lecturer in education specializing in Primary Mathematics and Computational thinking. He gained a B.Sc. in Biochemistry in 1997 and then went on to complete a PGCE in Chemistry at the University of Wales Bangor in 1999. He began teaching Science and Mathematics in secondary schools in 1999 and contributed to ECDL courses for Coleg Menai night classes for adults.

In 2003 he was selected to be one of Cynnal’s NOF trainers where he developed ICT professional development materials and classes for teachers in Gwynedd and Mon.

Owen has spent the last 15 years teaching Mathematics and ICT as well as contributing to pastoral responsibilities and academic progress intervention programs for secondary pupils.

Owen has specialized in primary/secondary transition projects and worked with such stakeholders as STENA and the Objective One Funding to facilitate ground breaking numeracy experiences for primary school pupils.
Owen joined the School of Education and Human Development in 2014 to work on the PGCE primary and BA undergraduate programs with QTS, and his research activities and interests are Mathematics History and pedagogy, Computational thinking and coding.

Owen has worked with several schools in the area and led computer coding CPD events for teachers and workshops for pupils. He is currently working on research within this field, and is involved in consultation work for Microsoft UK.

Owen is currently writing up his dissertation involving research on Mathematical anxiety and its implications for trainee teachers.

Professional accreditation and qualifications

Owen was nominated and attained a 2017 Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert. This role entails pioneering the latest technology in university and schools as well as consultant work with Microsoft Education software development.


Owen’s main role is leading the Primary GTP course as course director and in coordinating and teaching on the PGCE Primary (mathematics) as well as the BA qts undergraduate programme. but he also teaches on and contributes to the modules below:

£2,000 Digital Creative Practitioner grant by Menai Science Park Ltd
£500 Digital Creative Practitioner allowance for running digital creativity in the workplace workshops for GIZDA.
£12,000- Welsh Government / WISERD to research into how the Digital Competency Framework is being implemented.
