French, German, and Italian at Bangor University: A Journey of Language and Culture
Learn how studying French, German, and Italian at Bangor University provides academic excellence and invaluable real-world experience. Hear from a student who took full advantage of the course's unique year-abroad programme and small class sizes.
Why Study Languages at Bangor?
I chose to study at Bangor because of the opportunity to undertake a three-language degree with a year and a half abroad, spending a semester in each country. I also chose it because Bangor is very different from Birmingham. It's easy to get around, and you can readily meet people through clubs and societies, as it's a relatively small place. The course lasts four years, with the year and a half abroad commencing in the second half of the second semester.
Small Class Sizes, Personalised Learning
A key advantage of the course is the small class sizes in Bangor for languages. This creates the ideal environment to develop strong language skills, as lecturers can address your individual needs and provide resources and guidance for improvement.
Immersive Experiences Abroad: France, Italy, and Germany
I spent my first semester in Lille, France. Although it was challenging initially, my French reading and writing skills improved significantly, and I made lasting friendships. In my second year, I went to Italy to the University of Padua (Melania), one of the oldest universities in Europe. This was a fantastic experience, with excellent support for international students. The university understood the challenges of arriving in a new country and organised events for international students to socialise and make friends. For my final placement, I went to Leipzig in Germany, a beautiful university where I thoroughly enjoyed my studies.
Building a Language Community
I'm the president of the Languages Society at Bangor, which has been a great way to connect with other students and get to know people from all years of my course. It's a wonderful opportunity to socialise and engage with fellow language enthusiasts outside the academic setting.
Future Aspirations
I plan to take a year off to work in Birmingham before pursuing a master's degree in Italian, hoping to eventually earn a PhD.

Why I Chose Bangor University
From the moment I visited Bangor University on an open day, I fell in love with the place. The small, close-knit School of Languages instantly felt like the right fit for me. One of the best aspects of studying languages here is the personal connection you develop with your lecturers—they know you by name, and the supportive environment makes learning even more enjoyable.
The year abroad (third year) was a major factor in my decision. I had always been interested in spending time abroad, so having the opportunity to immerse myself in different cultures was a huge advantage.
I was so certain about Bangor that I attended three open days! The experience was fantastic—staff showed us around the city, different campuses, and the School of Languages. The talks were engaging, and I was convinced from the start that Bangor was the right place for me.
Student Support and Extracurricular Activities
Bangor University provides excellent student support, including personal tutors who are always available if you need help. The university also has a strong sense of community, with plenty of extracurricular activities to get involved in.
I’m actively involved in the Long Shot Society, which is the Languages Society, and I’ve played cricket since my first year, now serving as vice-captain of the team. This year, I also took up Gaelic football. The best part is that most sports clubs are free, so you can try different activities and find what suits you best!
The Year Abroad Experience
One of the highlights of the Spanish and French course at Bangor University is the year abroad. I had the incredible opportunity to study at universities in two different countries—Alicante in Spain and Brussels in Belgium. Experiencing two distinct cultures helped me grow both personally and academically.
The experience was challenging but highly rewarding. Living and studying abroad improved my language skills significantly, and I returned with a much deeper understanding of both Spanish and French cultures.
Career Aspirations
My time at Bangor has reinforced my desire to work abroad. I hope to pursue a career in Spain, possibly in the tourism industry or working for an international company. The language skills and cultural knowledge I’ve gained here have prepared me well for this path.
Why You Should Choose Bangor University
If you’re considering studying Spanish and French, Bangor University is the perfect place. The close-knit language department, excellent support system, and amazing year abroad opportunities make it a fantastic choice.

English Language and French Course at Bangor University
Why I Chose Bangor University
From my very first open day, I knew Bangor was the right place for me. I kept returning for every open day and applicant visit because I loved the atmosphere and could easily envision myself living here. Bangor quickly felt like home.
Course Structure and Learning Opportunities
One of the best aspects of the English Language and French course is the variety of modules. In year two, we study grammar, translation, listening, and conversation, ensuring we develop a strong foundation in both languages.
A highlight of the course is the opportunity to speak with native French speakers. I've had a language buddy every semester, which has been an amazing way to practice and build confidence.
Favourite Modules
One of my favourite modules was the Paris module, which explored the history of Paris within the broader context of France. It was fascinating to see how different historical events shaped the country. I even learned about French government and politics, which I didn’t expect to enjoy, but found incredibly interesting.
Student Life and Extracurricular Activities Dance Society
I'm part of the Dance Society, where I take part in various dance styles, including tap dancing, which I’ve loved for years. It’s been great to continue my passion alongside my studies.
I’m also a member of Veg Soc, where I attend meetings and events focused on plant-based living. Additionally, I contribute to Seren, Bangor’s student newspaper, where I’ve worked on exciting articles and collaborated with passionate writers.
Year Abroad Experience
A key part of studying English Language and French at Bangor is the year abroad. I’ve applied to work with the British Council, teaching English as a foreign language to French students—possibly in a secondary or primary school.
I’ve applied for placements in three locations, but my top choice is Brittany. Since I speak Welsh, I’m excited to explore the linguistic connection between Welsh and Breton. No matter where I go, I can’t wait to immerse myself in French culture and language.
Future Aspirations
I hope to use my language skills in my future career, whether that’s in teaching, translation, or another international role. More than anything, I’m looking forward to travelling, experiencing new cultures, and putting my skills into practice.
