Students completing this course will have an understanding of the fundamentals underpinning computing and its applications with a specialisation in the area of visualisation. You will be able to describe the operation of such software systems, apply the related principles into the implementation of properly engineered software, and understand the drivers for future trends.
- To provide the foundations for understanding of core ideas, methods and technologies in computer science.
- To provide the technical skills and background material so that the postgraduate will be able to conduct a near state-of-the-art research or development project with a specialisation in visualisation.
- To provide the graduate with a range of specialist and transferable skills;
- To provide the educational base for further professional development and lifelong learning.
Student Study Support
All students are assigned a designated supervisor, an academic member of staff who will provide formal supervision and support on a daily basis.
The School’s Director of Postgraduate Studies will ensure that the appropriate level of support and guidance is available for all postgraduate students, and each Course Director is available to help and advise their students as and when required.

A 2(ii) undergraduate Honours degree in Computer Science is required.
Applicants from overseas must in addition demonstrate competence in English to level IELTS 6.0 overall and no element under 5.5. An appopriate ELCOS (Bangor University English Language School) pre-sessional course may be taken to achieve the required English language level.

When to apply
The University will accept applications throughout the year, but we would generally advise that you send in your application form by the end of June to ensure that you have time to make any funding and/or accommodation arrangements, and for documents such as transcripts and references to be obtained if not submitted with the application. This will also give you more time to meet any conditions we may potentially attach to an offer.
Computer Science at Bangor is regularly ranked amongst the top universities in the UK for employability according to league tables. The Software Alliance Wales (SAW) Project helps to foster collaborations with local IT companies. There are also many opportunities in the IT industry in many sectors due to the presence of a comparatively high number of IT companies and SMEs in north Wales.
Researchers in the School are leaders in the field of visualisation, and are part of the Research Institute in Visual Computing (RIVIC), a collaborative amalgamation of research programmes between the computer science departments in Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff and Swansea Universities. The School has many links with industry (e.g. IBM, EADS) and organisations (North Wales Police, MOD, DSTL). The job market for computer science students with specialist skills in visualisation encompasses all areas of the IT industry since the need for visualisation is fundamental.
