Our History

Sport has always been an important part of the student experience at Bangor University.

The first major development of modern sports facilities came in the 1960s and 1970s, at a time of great expansion in student numbers, with the construction of the original sports hall on the current Maes Glas site. At this time the University also developed the Treborth site pitches.

Further developments came in the 1990s with the addition of the Normal site sports facilities on the amalgamation of the Normal College and UCNW to form the University of Wales, Bangor. A joint user agreement with Gwynedd Council also allowed the construction of the first class athletics facilities at Treborth.

In 1998 the University, in association with Sportslot, were able to develop the £1.65 million Maes Glas Sports Centre. This facilty offers some of the finest equipment in North Wales and is open to both the staff and students of the University and the General Public.
