Sports Injury Rehabilitation

Semester2

Trefnydd: Dr Anthony Blanchfield

Amcanion cyffredinol

An overview of the processes of rehabilitation. This is a very large subject so it is only possible to give a theoretical overview in the time available. This will be done by considering a number of different injures covering different tissues and body parts. Whilst the course will focus on the treatment of elite athletes, the principles studied can be applied at all levels.

Cynnwys cwrs

The module will cover the following areas:

  • Physiology of injury; therapeutic techniques used in rehabilitation Exercise, training principle and physical techniques used in rehabilitation
  • The physical rehabilitation of sports injuries, (through the use of examples in the shoulder, knee and lower leg)
  • The rehabilitation team, and rehab planning
  • Returning the athlete to competition and failure to rehabilitate
  • Current trends in research, critical assessment of research and future research directions

rhagorol

Most criteria are met to an excellent standard; all others are met to a very good standard Case study: The plan has to be holistic covering all the facets of rehabilitating the athlete. It has to be individual to the athletes considering his sport specific needs. It needs to cover the period from the injury to their return to full competition, including the pre-habitliation, early and late rehabilitation and return to play criteria. It should include objective tests to guide progression. The presentation has to fit in the 10 minutes available Viva: the student should be able to clarify any elements of the plan which are not clear and be able to support their choices by reference to published data.

Canlyniad dysgu

  1. By the end of this module students will be able to understand the rehabilitation process. In the time available they will not be able to gain the skills to become a physiotherapist or sports therapist but they will have an understanding of the aims and processes so that they can better work within a rehabilitation team.

  2. Students should be able to explain why particular methods are used in the rehabilitation process and assess the objective evidence which is available to support choices made.

  3. Students should be able to justify the contribution by their individual discipline, and understand how its fits with the rest of the Multi DisciplinaryTeam

INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATION Presentation of rehabilitation plan

In this part of the assignment you will formulate a rehabilitation plan for an individual, starting with their time prior to surgery, when they will be in a pre-habilitation phase, return to training and through to the return to performance sport. You will need to consider the different phases of his rehabilitation, outlining your plans for treatment and exercise, and the literature that supports it. The plan should consider all aspects of the individual recovery plan not just the shoulder injury.

Rhestr ddarllen

It will be helpful to have some understanding of what is involved in rehabilitation prior to the start of the module. Pre-course reading requirements will be very dependent on your previous background.

If you don’t have previous experience, Sports Rehabilitation & Injury Prevention by Comfort & Abrahamson (Willey Blackwell) gives a good introduction and will be helpful during the module as well as with your essay.

In order to understand the injuries and their rehabilitation some understanding of musculo-skeletal anatomy is needed. There are many books on anatomy and any of the simpler texts will be adequate. It is best to concentrate on the major joints and muscle groups.

There are many extensive anatomy books but something basic like Pocket Atlas of the Moving body by Mel Cash (Edbury Press) will give enough information for this module
