Module - Semester 2
30 credits
Module Organiser:
Denise Foran Conn
Overview
This module sets the foundation for understanding the core concepts and principles of behaviour analysis. These concepts and principles underpin the application of the science to problems of social significance. The aim of the module is to provide students with the necessary conceptual understanding to apply the key principles in clinical practice and research. On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate advanced skills and theoretical knowledge in the following specific areas of behaviour analysis: 1. Students will explain and identify the variables that support operant and respondent learning. 2. Students will consider the role of language in operant learning; they will define and categorise the verbal operants. Students will explain and identify examples of rule governed behaviour. 3. Students will critically analyse peer reviewed research papers relevant to the conceptual foundations of behaviour.
Week 1: What is behaviour Week 2: Consequences and reinforcement. Week 3: Discriminative Stimuli and Motivating operations. Week 4: Conditioned Stimuli, Consequences (part2) Week 5: Extinction and Schedules of Reinforcement Week 6: Stimulus Relations Week 7: The role of language
Assessment Strategy
Students will complete quizzes at the end of each unit in order to progress to the next unit. Students will be expected to complete two assignments.
Students will be awarded a grade only (feedback will only be provided if the grade is a fail) for each assignment and need to achieve above 50% in every component to pass the overall module. You must pass both modules to pass the bridging module Assessment Criteria: Excellent = 70%; Good = 60-69%; Threshold = 50-59%.
Excellent 70% + • Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of the principles of behaviour analysis and their application to clinical settings • Excellent understanding of the methodology and how it can help to answer to research questions. • Clear evidence of critical analysis and insightful evaluation of theory and research • Logically presented and defended arguments presented with coherent synthesis and original interpretation • Answer focussed on question, with no irrelevant material and clear structure • Well-structured presentation showing focus and clarity of argument and expression. Good 60 - 69% • Strong knowledge of principles of behaviour analysis Some insight into the applications of behaviour annalys in the real and good insight into their application in clinical practice. • Solid understanding of the methodology and the use in answering the research question. • Evidence of critical analysis and evaluation of theory and research. • Coherent arguments presented, with some limited synthesis and original interpretation • Answer focused on question, but with very little irrelevant material and clear structure • Well-structured presentation showing focus of argument and expression.
Threshold 50 – 59%
• Some basic consideration of the principles of behaviour analysis.
• Adequate knowledge of the application of the basic principles of behaviour analysis to clinical practice.
• Weaknesses in understanding the methodology and how it can be used to answer the research question.
• Limited evidence of critical analysis and evaluation of theory and research.
• Arguments are presented briefly, but they are weak with no synthesis or original interpretation.
• Answer only briefly focused on question and with some irrelevant material and poor structure.
• Weak presentation with disjointed structure and major APA format errors.
Learning Outcomes
- Critically analyse peer reviewed research papers relevant to the conceptual foundations of behaviour
- Explain and identify the variables that support operant and respondent learning
- Students will have an understanding of the role of language in operant learning and be able to define and categorise the verbal operants. Students will understand rule governed behaviour and provide examples

Description
Students will be asked to conduct a literature review on topic related to the principles and concepts of behaviour analysis. This will encourage assimilation of ideas and detailed knowledge of the principles of behaviour. It will include at least five peer reviewed journal articles, three of which were published in the last 10 years. Excellent 70% + • Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of applied behaviour analysis. • Depth of insight into the applications of behavioural principles in the real world. • Excellent understanding and original interpretation of theoretical issues with no factual errors • Clear evidence of critical analysis and insightful evaluation of theory and research. • Logically presented and defended arguments presented with coherent synthesis and original interpretation. •Answer focused on question, with no irrelevant material and clear structure. • Well-structured presentation showing focus and clarity of argument and expression. Good 60 - 69% • Strong knowledge of key concepts in applied behaviour analysis. • Some insight into the applications of behavioural principles in the real world. • Solid understanding of theoretical issues mostly free of factual errors. • Evidence of critical analysis and evaluation of theory and research. • Coherent arguments presented, with some limited synthesis and original interpretation • Answer focussed on question, but with very little irrelevant material and clear structure • Well-structured presentation showing focus of argument and expression. Threshold 50 – 59% • Adequate knowledge of some of the key concepts in applied behaviour analysis only. • Some basic consideration of the applications of behaviourism in the real world. • Weaknesses in understanding theoretical issues with multiple/major factual errors. • Limited evidence of critical analysis and evaluation of theory and research. • Arguments are presented briefly, but they are weak with no synthesis or original interpretation. • Answer only briefly focussed on question and with some irrelevant material and poor structure. • Weak presentation with disjointed structure and major APA format errors.

Description
The aim of the first essay will be to read, summarise, and reflect on peer reviewed research articles. Students will be asked to choose one topic that we discuss in class. Student will be asked to read 4 papers on a specific topic and summarise each paper, describe the research question, the methods used to answer the research question. Students will consider the findings of the papers and discuss how they can be applied clinically and also consider any questions that still remain. Excellent 70% + • Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of applied behaviour analysis. • Depth of insight into the applications of behavioural principles in the real world. • Excellent understanding of the research question and how the methodology is appropriate to answer it. • Clear evidence of critical analysis and insightful evaluation of theory and research. • Solid understanding of the research design and its utility in answering the research questions. • Weaknesses in understanding the methodology and its utility in answering the research question.
