Race Equity in Play: Rewriting the Hidden Rules of Postgraduate Research (In-person)
Postgraduate research is shaped by more than formal policies and procedures.
It is also shaped by the conversations that happen behind closed doors, the opportunities shared through informal networks, the confidence to challenge a supervisor, and the unspoken rules that some researchers are expected to understand without ever being taught.
This interactive development day invites PGRs, supervisors, academic staff and professional-services colleagues to explore how race, power, belonging and opportunity can influence the postgraduate research experience.
Delivered by ImposterPlay Lab (Founder/Director Dr Melissa Jogie), the session will move beyond traditional awareness training. Through realistic scenarios, practical activities and facilitated discussion, participants will examine the everyday moments where inequality can emerge — in supervision, feedback, networking, progression, visibility and access to support.
Together, we will explore questions such as:
- Who gets encouraged, sponsored and included?
- How do we recognise when a difficult experience reflects more than an individual misunderstanding?
- What makes it easier — or harder — for a PGR to speak up?
- What can supervisors, Schools, Colleges and the University do differently?
Participants will have the opportunity to test responses to challenging situations, consider different perspectives and help shape practical recommendations for a more transparent, supportive and race-equitable postgraduate research environment at Bangor University.
No specialist knowledge is required, and no one will be expected to share personal experiences.
Come ready to think differently, challenge assumptions and contribute to meaningful change.
