Amcanion cyffredinol

The module examines notions of cultural identity through close reading of a range of films and reference to television series produced in Catalonia. It introduces key cinematic concepts, genres and techniques and considers definitions of a ‘national cinema’ in relation to the Catalan context. The module situates the emergence of a Catalan cinematic tradition in the mid-1960s and with respect to the second avant-gardes and the Barcelona School of Film and covers a period spanning five decades of Catalan socio-cultural history. It examines the multiplicity of identities on screen (gender, sexuality, urban, multicultural and transnational) through the following topics: literary adaptations; the construction of place; gendered subjects; trauma studies; historical memory and multilingualism.
