Professor appointed Chair of Singapore’s Nuclear Safety Advisory Panel
Professor Laurence G Williams, Sêr Cymru Professor of nuclear policy and regulation at Bangor University's Nuclear Futures Institute, has been appointed the Chair of Singapore’s National Environment Agency’s (NEA) Nuclear Safety Advisory Panel (NSAP).
The members of the NSAP have vast experience in their respective fields and the Panel is working closely with the NEA to build capabilities in nuclear safety, nuclear security, and safeguards to support the assessment of the potential of advanced nuclear energy technologies for Singapore and for Singapore to respond to a region considering nuclear energy deployment. Earlier this year, an NSAP meeting was held in Singapore where the panel shared valuable insights and considerations for nuclear safety for Singapore and the region, as well as meet with Singapore’s political office holders.
Laurence said, “It is a great honour for me to be appointed the Chair of the NSAP. I look forward to working with my fellow panel members to help Singapore in its considerations on the deployment of nuclear energy to support its need for energy security and low carbon electricity in the coming years.”
In recognition of his significant contribution to Singapore’s nuclear safety mission, it was recently announced that Laurence has been awarded the Singapore Public Service Medal. He will formally receive the medal from the President of Singapore at the Investiture ceremony on 16 November.
