Bangor Lecturer Presents at International Symposium in Oxford
Friday, 19th of September 2025, Dr Gareth Evans-Jones, Lecturer in Philosophy, Ethics and Religion at Bangor University, presented his research at a significant international academic symposium hosted at Mansfield College, University of Oxford.
The symposium, 'Intergenerational Dialogue for Just Futures', gathered scholars, researchers, and policy makers from across the globe to address how intergenerational dialogue can contribute to justice, reconciliation, and social transformation.
The event opened with a keynote speech by Professor Youssef Mahmoud, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Senior Adviser at the International Peace Institute, who explored the global significance of dialogue in peacebuilding and community security.

Dr Evans-Jones presented a paper as part of the 'Understandings of Intergenerational Dialogue' session, entitled, 'Relational Ethics in Peacebuilding: Intergenerational Listening as a Method of Restorative Justice'. His presentation emphasised the transformative role of intergenerational listening in fostering reconciliation, building trust, and promoting restorative justice across communities affected by conflict. An elaborated version of this paper will be published in a future edition of the Journal of Dialogue Studies.
The symposium featured a wide range of international perspectives, with contributions on intergenerational justice in contexts as diverse as Northern Ireland, South Africa, Brazil, Korea, and beyond. The programme underlined the power of collaborative dialogue across generations in shaping more just and sustainable futures.
The symposium also fostered significant new working relationships and international collaborations, with Dr Evans-Jones expected to play an active role in forthcoming projects, which will be developed over the coming months.
