The concert will be held at Bangor University’s Prichard Jones Hall this Saturday, 28 February at 7pm.
All proceeds from the concert will support the David Cousins Music Scholarship at Bangor University.
Special guests Blue Weaver (Amen Corner, Strawbs, the Bee Gees), Cathryn Craig (the Righteous Brothers), and Brian Willoughby (Strawbs, Mary Hopkin) will join the Bangor University Symphony Orchestra and the Bangor University Chamber Choir to celebrate David’s timeless songs that helped define British folk-rock.
David died in July after a unique, varied, and distinguished career. He was one of the most distinctive singer-songwriters to emerge from the British scene in the 1960s, later becoming a pioneer of independent local radio in the 1980s and 1990s. His contribution to British songwriting is immense, and he leaves behind a rich, deep, and varied body of finely crafted songs and recordings. In David’s own words, from Hanging in the Gallery, one of his most exceptional songs: “He is silent now, will sing no more.”
David had a special connection to Bangor University. His final public performance took place there on 21 March 2025. In the early days of his career, in November 1964, he performed at the University with the Strawberry Hill Boys, a group he was part of before Strawbs. Over 60 years later, he returned to give two lectures in the Music Department to an appreciative audience of students and staff, offering a new generation of musicians the opportunity to learn from a master songwriter.
The concert will be introduced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edmund Burke, a great friend of David Cousins.
Dr John Cunningham, Head of the Dept of Arts said: “David Cousins was one of the most prolific and important British songwriters of the last 50 years. We were honoured to have him visit the Music department last March to talk with our students – in what was his last public appearance. The concert will be a wonderful tribute to his life and music, featuring performances and arrangements by staff and students of the University, alongside Blue Weaver (honorary Professor of Music here), Brian Willoughby and Cathryn Craig. The concert will also launch the David Cousins Music Scholarship.”
