Persimmon Lucky Tree in Clay: A Creative Lunchtime Workshop at Bangor University!
As part of the Discover Chinese Culture – Free Lunchtime Workshops series, the Confucius Institute at Bangor University recently welcomed students, staff, and members of the local community to a creative and relaxing session exploring Chinese symbolism through clay.
During the workshop “Persimmon Lucky Tree in Clay,” participants learned about the cultural meaning of the persimmon in Chinese tradition. In Chinese culture, the persimmon is often associated with good fortune and smooth success, and the persimmon lucky tree is a popular decorative ornament believed to bring positive energy and good luck to the home.
Guided by tutors from the Confucius Institute, participants used soft, colourful clay to shape their own miniature persimmon trees. Step by step, they created small branches and bright persimmon fruits, transforming simple materials into cheerful ornaments inspired by traditional Chinese decorative crafts.
The workshop provided a calm and enjoyable space for creativity, allowing everyone to relax, experiment with clay modelling, and learn about the cultural symbolism behind this popular ornament.
By the end of the session, each participant had created their own persimmon lucky tree to take home, a small handmade keepsake symbolising good luck and prosperity.
The Discover Chinese Culture lunchtime workshop series continues to offer a welcoming opportunity for people at Bangor University and the wider community to experience Chinese culture through hands-on creative activities. Free and open to all, the sessions provide a relaxing break in the middle of the day while discovering new artistic traditions.
