The investment follows the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Welsh Government, UK Government, Isle of Anglesey County Council and Stena Line UK. It unlocks the first tranche of seed capital for seven projects that will strengthen infrastructure, stimulate economic growth and create new jobs across North Wales.
Among the projects receiving support is Egni, the second major research and innovation building at M‑SParc. The development will feature state‑of‑the‑art laboratories, workspace, an innovation hall and a dedicated materials analysis facility, expanding the park’s capacity for companies working in low‑carbon, digital and advanced manufacturing sectors.
Egni will build on the University’s academic strengths and M‑SParc’s established innovation ecosystem, supporting the region’s transition to a low‑carbon future by providing jobs, skills development and opportunities for businesses to scale.
A key element of the development is the expansion of Bangor University’s low‑carbon research capability, including the work of the Nuclear Futures Institute (NFI). The investment will help create an integrated innovation environment where university researchers and industry partners work side by side, accelerating real‑world applications and attracting further private‑sector investment.
Professor Paul Spener, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research said, “Today’s announcement marks a major milestone for innovation and economic growth in North Wales. The investment in Anglesey Freeport and the commitment to the Egni development at M‑Sparc highlights Bangor University’s central role in driving research excellence and delivering sustainable, long‑term economic benefit for the region”.
“Egni will significantly expand our partnership work with industry, accelerate low‑carbon innovation and create new opportunities for skills, jobs and business growth. We look forward to working closely with Freeport partners to ensure this momentum benefits communities across North Wales.”
