Aeron Dafydd I love the supportive student experience at Bangor

Aeron is studying Sociology and Criminology, and Criminal Justice at Bangor University

How would you describe the teaching style on the course?
"The teaching style is really supportive. Lecturers encourage open discussion and critical thinking rather than simply learning facts, which makes sessions more engaging. It also helps me feel confident contributing and asking questions."

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying this subject?
"I’d say come with an open mind, make the most of the support available, and enjoy every moment - it goes by much faster than you think."

Tomos Llwyd Jones Bangor is boosting my career confidence

Tomos is studying Sociology and Social Policy at Bangor University

Why did you choose to study this course at Bangor?
"I chose Sociology and Social Policy because it covers such a wide range of topics that genuinely relate to real life. After several years in the workplace, returning to education felt like a big step, but the staff and my personal tutor made settling in so easy. Studying through Welsh was also really important to me, and it’s helped me feel part of a supportive community."

What has been your favourite part of the course so far?
"My favourite part has been the practical experiences - going on an overseas trip, connecting with the local council, and preparing for a work‑experience placement with HMP Berwyn. These opportunities have helped me see how the theory applies in the real world, and they’ve boosted my confidence and career focus."

Sociology and Social Policy has never been more relevant. How we address things such as the housing crisis and the challenges in the NHS are major concerns and Social Policy can offer solutions to these and many other problems.

I've always been interested in how society is governed and what policies make the greater differences to things like poverty and inequality. Social Policy examines these areas and offers solutions to some of society's major problems in areas such as housing and welfare.

I enjoy teaching about topical and current issues in tackling poverty and inequality in UK society and beyond.  I have students from all over the world in my classes and I enjoy hearing their stories and experiences regarding social policies in areas such as health and education.

I enjoy interacting with the students and learning from their experiences of welfare states world-wide. It is great to engage students in class discussions especially after I've delivered a presentation on a topical area.
