Systems developed by members of the group
Researchers within the group have already discovered that focused high frequency microwave energy delivered through small bespoke antenna structures can give the medical practitioner the ability to selectively destroy cancerous tissue in otherwise hard to reach areas of the body, thereby negating the need for invasive surgery.
MicroBlate™
Controlled focused measurement and ablation system, for locating and treating breast tumours.
The MicroBlate system probably the most advanced electrosurgical system ever developed. It delivers focussed high frequency microwave energy into tissue to detect cancerous lesions and then controllably destroys the tumour, leaving a well defined margin of healthy tissue. This system offers clear advantages over all other treatment and measurement systems currently available, i.e. Chemotherapy, Radiation therapy, RF ablation, etc. The location aspect is enhanced using a hand held ultrasound scanner to provide a basic image of where to insert the antenna. The sensitive tissue state measurement system contained within the MicroBlate system ensures the antenna is positioned exactly at the centre of the tumour prior to commencing ablation.
GastroBlate™
Device for treating acid indigestion or gastro esophageal reflux disorder.
This system is particularly useful for treating oesophageal reflux disorder where it is necessary to produce controlled thermal damage to the inner lining of the oesophagus. Novel proprietary antennae structures have been developed and integrated into a standard surgical balloon. This system offers the potential to provide a quick and non-traumatic treatment solution prior to the onset of oesophageal cancer, which could have a great impact on healthcare services world wide.
PortaBlate™
A portable ablation system for treating thread veins and small skin lesions.
This technology delivers controlled focussed heat into thread veins or small lesions on the surface of the skin.
The Medical Microwave Systems Group would like to thank Medical Device Innovations (MDi) Ltd for its support which enabled the development of the MicroBlate GastroBlate) and PortaBlate systems.
