Module - Semester 1 & 2
10 credits
Module Organiser:
Tirion Roberts
Overview
This module recognizes that students will come onto the programme with a wide range of experience with computers and in computer programming.
The syllabus aims to provide students with an appreciation of the importance of using a database within a real-life situation through the simulation of a business and to support them in constructing a database and then making use of it to identify and solve problems within the context of the simulated business.
The module develops transferable skills which will be of help to the students when they progress onto level 4 of their Computing degree.
Key topics: 1. Key concepts and skills in the use of tabular data and databases 2. An introduction to the underlying technologies 3. Construction and interpretation of tabular data on paper 4. Accessing data held in a small database 5. Concept of key data types 6. Extending tables in an existing database 7. Development of a system appropriate to the small, simulated business. 8. Use of the database to respond to queries, solve problems and support the information flow within the simulated business to aid its business operations and, in particular, its reporting functions.

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate the ability to work individually and in groups to construct and use a database in a simulated business situation
- Extend tables of data in an existing database to cater for additional needs and requirements
- Respond to a range of queries and provide additional information required within the simulated business
- Solve problems using a database
- Use and interpret tabular data presented both on paper and in an existing database
