Overview

In this module, you will learn essential skills for planning and conducting scientific methods in Psychology. This includes identifying different types of experiments, formulating research questions, and addressing ethical considerations. You will also learn how to write a research report, with a focus on the Literature Review section, which will prepare you for your third-year research project dissertation. Additionally, you will be introduced to both qualitative and quantitative methods, with a specific focus on quantitative methods. This will cover the basics of descriptive and inferential statistics using commonly used processing software. You will also learn how to calculate averages and determine statistical differences between groups in guided workshops.

During this module students will learn about deploying the scientific method in planning, undertaking and interpreting research within the subject area.

Assessment Strategy

Threshold (40-49% / D- to D+) Has shown knowledge of key areas and principles but there is a weakness in understanding the subject area and research methods. Limited evidence of background study and research. Weak presentation of material with poor structure and little adherence to APA standards.

Satisfactory (50–59% / C- to C+) Has shown knowledge of the key areas and principles. The main elements of the subject area and research methods are understood. Some limited evidence of background study and research. Satisfactory presentation of material with some weaknesses in structure and partial adherence to APA standards.

Good (60-69% / B- to B+)
Has shown a strong knowledge and understands most of the subject area and research methods. Evidence of background study and research. Good presentation of material which mostly adhere to APA standards.

Excellent (70%-100% / A- to A*) Has shown a comprehensive knowledge and detailed understanding of the subject area and research methods. Work shows extensive background study and research. Excellent presentation of material which fully adheres to APA standards.
