The research skills module aims to prepare students for an extensive, Masters level, hypothesis-driven research project. Effective independent research requires key skills directly applicable to the investigation of a specific research hypothesis and integrating in-depth knowledge of observational and experimental research methods. The module will begin by discussing research design specific to healthcare and biomedical models, for both hypothesis generating and hypothesis testing studies. It will then go on to analytically discuss the benefits and limitations of quantitative and qualitative research methods, and investigate appropriate data collection methods and data analysis tools. The module will have an additional focus on literature search and critical appraisal skills required to competently conduct a literature review. In collaboration with project supervisors and research groups, the module aims to develop the in-depth knowledge and specialist skills necessary to the conduct of research in Clinical Science fields
The module will cover the international ethical and scientific quality standards for the design, conduct, recording and reporting of health research involving human subjects, in accordance to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and the requirements of ICH Good Clinical Practice. It will introduce the principles of scientifically robust qualitative and quantitative methods both of observational and experimental design and will discuss in depth issues around formulating a research question, conducting a literature review to present the study rationale and support a research hypothesis, methods of data collection and analysis (including statistical analysis), ethical considerations and reporting research findings. Students will then develop specialist skills sets directly linked to research project area. Predominately clinical based projects will cover issues including validity and reliability. The purpose of the project is for students to develop their empirical research skills – to advance those skills acquired during undergraduate study, and to acquire new methodological and analytical techniques. However, it is not necessary for a student to carry out a full-fledged research study (e.g., a study with sufficient subjects to merit publication) or one that produces statistically significant results.
threshold Pass (Grade C; mark range 50-59%) Weaknesses in specific assessment areas may be apparent. The knowledge and Comprehension (Subject Expertise); analysis, evaluation and synthesis (Critical thinking); application and presentation (Transferable skills), demonstrated is adequate to enable a scientist, who is not an expert in the specific research area, to attain sufficient knowledge and comprehension of the project background subject area(s) and specific research project topic.
good Merit (Grade B; mark range 60-69%) No weakness in any assessment area is apparent. Good knowledge and Comprehension (Subject Expertise); analysis, evaluation and synthesis (Critical thinking); application and presentation (Transferable skills), is demonstrated in all assessments. At a level to enable a scientist, who is not an expert in the specific research area, to attain good knowledge and comprehension of the project background subject area(s) and specific research project topic. excellent
excellent Distinction (Grade A; mark range 70-100%) Excellent overall performance in each assessment area is apparent. Very good to excellent knowledge and Comprehension (Subject Expertise); analysis, evaluation and synthesis (Critical thinking); application and presentation (Transferable skills), is demonstrated in all assessments. At a level to enable a scientist, who is not an expert in the specific research area, to attain fully comprehensive knowledge and comprehension of the project background subject area(s) and specific research project topic
