Amcanion cyffredinol
The module aims to develop the student advanced clinical practitioner with the knowledge and skills required to take an effective, systematic and comprehensive clinical history. The practitioner will develop a deep understanding of the consultation process and will by the end of the module understand the importance of effective communication techniques and using a systematic approach. The module is aimed at any practitioner who is working at an advanced level and needs to develop their consultation skills.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the Covid 19 crisis, the module will be delivered on line for all students through Blackboard Ultra. Students will be required to have access to IT and up to date computer and software.

Topics may include:
- Illness behaviour and consulting behaviour
- Explanatory models and folk illness
- Asking the right questions concerning the patient’s presenting complaint i.e. the patient presenting with chest pain.
- Setting Ambience
- Building rapport
- Information gathering
- Determining the patient’s goal for consultation and achieving concordance with management plan
- Patient education/counselling
- Discussion of the management/treatment of illness
- Closing the interview
- Documentation
- Ethical and legal factors affecting clinical decision making e.g. patient’s right to information
