This module will review teaching methodologies and approaches commonly employed in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) with a focus on and the implementation of the two popular methodologies Communicative Language Learning and Task-Based Learning. It offers a foundation in the practical issues of teaching EFL, covering teacher role, lesson planning, assessment of language skills, as well as teaching grammar and the four skills.
Students will benefit from the opportunity to observe live EFL classes (over 4hrs approximately). This may take place online, dependent on COVID 19 restrictions, live lesson availability and social distancing restrictions that may be in place. The module will also offer the opportunity to explore the nature of TEFL through micro-teaching with your student peers in seminars, as well as teaching in real EFL classes with English language students, both of which will demand post-teaching reflection and analysis.
All live teaching practice is also dependent on whether or not COVID 19 restrictions are in place, and whether there is availability to live lessons for practice. This will be confirmed at the beginning of the module and/or as the module continues, on a weekly basis.
Please note that this module DOES NOT replace the professional development training courses in teaching English to other speakers, namely the Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or the Trinity TESOL Certificate (certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). However, it will provide a firm foundation in English language teaching (ELT) and should provide you with the confidence to apply for a place on a CELTA or Trinity Certificate course, should you wish to do so.

ESSAY | Essay (1500 words) | This essay will entail a literature review of current ELT (English Language Teaching) methodology and how this may be applied in practice - a consideration of classroom planning and teaching based on current ELT thinking. |

DEMONSTRATION/PRACTICE | Lesson Observation & Written Evaluative Reflection | This task is a practical teaching task - you will work with a partner to plan a 60minute lesson for a specific group of learners, on one grammar point, using material given to you by the course convenor. You will each teach for 30minutes, putting your plan into practice with a live lesson. The teaching will be observed and graded by the course convenor. You will discuss the plan in a tutorial prior to the practice session. You will write and submit a reflection of this teaching practice. |
20.00 |
REPORT | Lesson Plan Report | You will submit a report of your teaching plan - you must provide a detailed commentary on your lesson plan, discussing the methodology you will follow, how the lesson will develop, who the learners are, and what they will study, the materials you will use and how you will use them, and so on. This report involves a detailed description of the lesson plan, supported by the literature on teaching English as a foreign language. |

Fieldwork | Observations and teaching of EFL lessons are part of this module. You are expected to carry out approx. 3-4 hours English language teaching observations (observing up to three lessons) over the two semesters, with opportunities for feedback from the module tutor and peer student discussion in seminars about the issues observed in the language lessons. These observations may have to take place online in accordance with any changes to teaching due to Covid-19 regulations. You will also be expected to teach up to 3 separate lessons of 30minutes each, with a student teaching partner. Again, this will be dependent on availability. Teaching practice in 2021-22 will depend on availability of language lessons for practice. This could be impacted by any Covid-19 suspension of language classes. This will be confirmed once the 2021-22 term starts, and during the course on a weekly basis. |
5 |
Lecture | Fortnightly two hour lecture over both semesters - these may have to occur online as a result of any Covid-19 restrictions continuing into the 2021-22 term. If this happens, these may then occur as blended learning (a combination of on campus and online teaching). Teaching will be confirmed before the term begins. |
22 |
Tutorial | Students are encouraged to see the lecturer on a one-to-one basis during published office hours (or by appointment) to discuss any issues with the module content, and to seek clarification on topics and discussions, and discuss feedback on assessments and class exercises. You will meet at least once with your teaching partner to discuss your teaching practice and get help planning your planning for teaching practice. Tutorials may have to take place online if COVID restrictions occur during the semester. This will be confirmed as and when necessary. |
2 |
Private study | Directed Reading - students are given required reading each week (of about 2 hours) on the topic of the coming lecture. |
28 |
Private study | In their own time, students will be expected to do further reading, go through materials covered in class and do further research on the topics, and prepare assignments. |
139 |
Seminar | There are 5 one hour seminars over the 2 semesters. These sessions will provide an opportunity for in-depth reflection with both peers and the module convener on teaching practice and teaching observation sessions, offering a forum for discussion of teaching issues and related EFL teaching strategies. The basis of the discussion will be students’ own reflection on teaching observations as well as peer led micro-teaching held in these sessions. |
