Professor Colin Baker

Colin Baker was Pro Vice Chancellor Bangor University, Wales, UK (2007-2012) and Professor of Education (1994-2012), and is now Emeritus Professor at Bangor University.

He is the author of 20 books and over 140 articles mostly on bilingualism, with specific interests in language planning and bilingual education. His book 'Foundations of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism' (Multilingual Matters, 1993, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2017) has been translated into Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Latvian, Georgian, Greek, Vietnamese and Mandarin Chinese. The 2017 edition was written with Wayne Wright (Purdue University) as the co-author. The Encyclopedia of Bilingualism and Bilingual Education (Multilingual Matters, co-written with Sylvia Prys Jones) won the British Association for Applied Linguistics Book Prize Award for 1999. He was awarded the California Association for Bilingual Education Special Recognition Award of 2000 for Outstanding Research and Scholarly Activity.

His 'Parents and Teachers Guide to Bilingualism' was first published in 1995 with further editions in 2000, 2007 and 2014. The book is the world's best-selling guide for parents and teachers in raising and developing bilingual children. It has been published in Swedish, Estonian, Spanish, Turkish, German, Mandarin Chinese and Korean.

He was Editor of the International Journal of Bilingualism and Bilingual Education for 15 years and an Editorial Board member for numerous international journals. He was a grant recipient and Co-Director of a £6.5.million Bilingualism Research Centre based at Bangor University (ESRC, and partly funded by the Welsh Assembly Government). In addition to academic activities, he has held two government appointments as a member of the Assessment and Curriculum Council and the Welsh Language Board. In 2010, he was appointed to undertake a review of bilingual provision in the Welsh Government.
