To ensure the maintenance and enhancement of the quality of work within the ITE programmes across the School of Education and Human Development and the North and Mid Wales Centre of Teacher Education.
Hazel is a lecturer in Education (Initial Teacher Education and Early Childhood) and joined the School of Education and Human Development in 2010. After a first career in Primary Teaching, she went on to work for a Local Education Authority as an Early Entitlement Advisory Teacher and Foundation Phase Training and Support Officer. Since coming to the University, alongside her lecturing commitments, Hazel has been Course Director for the Graduate Teacher Programme and the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood and Learning Support Studies. She took over as Director of ITE across the Centre in 2017.

Research supervision for PGCE and masters students in the field of Early Childhood
Hazel has sat on the Welsh Government Task and Finish Group for the Foundation Phase and worked closely with the Care Council for Wales.
Expertise and Research Interests
Hazel’s main interests are in Early Childhood and Learning and the Development of 0-7 year olds. Her Early Childhood Masters Degree is in Child-Initiated Learning in the Foundation Phase and she is particularly interested in child-initiated play, the child's voice and ownership of their own learning. She also lectures on early literacy and communication and is currently researching Communication and MAKATON in Flying Start settings. Hazel is also interested in the role of support staff in Foundation Phase settings.
