Note: this module will be run as a short, fat module in weeks 7-12

This module is designed to examine the effects of societal, cultural and economic changes on parenting as well as the support available to promote good parenting practices. It will explore the concept of ‘parenthood’ and how this has changed over time. Students will engage with evidence-based literature to explore different parenting strategies and how these impact on children’s behavioural, emotional and social development. Examples will be given from cross-cultural research and links will be made to current developments in policy and practice for children and their families. The module will include elements of sociology and psychology.

This assignment asks you to write a discussion on how societal, cultural and/or economic changes have influenced parenting behaviours. You may choose to focus on societal, cultural or economic factors separately or all three together. You will need to link to a relevant theory and discuss how the changes in parenting behaviours impact on child outcomes.

ASTUDIAETH ACHOS Case study: Parenting plan

Students will choose one of three example case studies of common parenting challenges (e.g., eating, sleeping, screen-time, etc.). Students must review the information and write a plan of action based on the parenting challenge. The students must consider the likely outcomes for the parent and child and suggest effective strategies for the parent to use in such situations, as well as identifying key professionals that parents can contact for additional support. This assignment will allow students to consider the implications of everyday parenting challenges on parents and children whilst also developing the following key professional skills: 1. Making use of the most up-to-date information to predict outcomes. 2. Recognising that outcomes depend on individual circumstances. 3. Using reliable information to make a plan for the parent. 4. Give a professional, evidence-based opinion on a realistic case.
