Mr Mathew Owen
Lecturer in Screenwriting
Mathew is an award winning filmmaker and Lecturer in Screenwriting at Bangor University.
In 2013 he graduated from Bangor University with a BA in Film Studies. As part of his undergraduate dissertation on film semiotics, he wrote and produced the short film ‘Long I Stood There’ which went on to win multiple awards at UK films festivals as well as a Royal Television Society award for Best Fiction Film.
Mathew remained at Bangor to study an MA in Filmmaking where he produced his short science-fiction film ‘Turn On’ performing multiple roles as Writer, Director, Cinematographer, Editor and Visual Effects Artist. The film, made with a budget of just under £1000, premiered at the world renowned Sidewalk Film Festival in Alabama in 2014. It also went on to win Best Short Film at The Philip K. Dick Science Fiction Festival in New York, Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy at Screentest Film Festival and the John Hefin award for best short film made in Wales at the BAFTA qualifying Carmarthen Bay Film Festival. The film was endorsed by Sir David Puttnam and David Jacobs (creator of Dallas) and was recognised by the BFI with screenings as part of their BFI Days of Fear and Wonder science fiction season and also as a featurette before the BFI re-release of ‘Bladerunner’ at Genesis Cinema in London.
In 2014 he was selected by Ffilm Cymru Wales for their Net.Work Director’s Lab and given the opportunity to developed his work with Oscar nominated writer/director Lenny Abrahamson (Room). He went on to secure as producer a three thousand pounds award through Ffilm Cymru Wales for the development of the short film ‘Natalie’ which he also edited. The film was written and directed by BAFTA Scotland winning writer/director, Mikey Murray, and which stars two-time BAFTA winning actress Kate Dickie (Prometheus, Game of Thrones). Natalie premiered at the prestigious Edinburgh Film Festival in 2017 where it was nominated for Best Short Film and has screened at several international film festivals.
