DSP Centre showcases research to Chief Scientific Advisor for Wales

On Thursday 27th April 2023, the new Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales, Professor Jas Pal Badyal FRS, was welcomed to Bangor University for the first stop on his tour of Welsh universities to understand how they are producing world-leading scientific research to address some of the biggest challenges facing humanity, including climate change, environmental degradation, renewable energy, food security, healthcare and rising social inequality.

As part of his tour, Professor Badyal visited the DSP Centre to find out more about our research and technologies. Dr Roger Giddings (Senior Lecturer in Optical Communications & DSP Centre Deputy Operation Director) led several live demonstrations of our technologies, including our Digital Fibre Optic Sensing (DFOS), Visible Light Communication (VLC) and Physical Layer Security (PLS) technologies, and our A55 Digital Twin. Also at the event representing the DSP Centre were several of our researchers, Dr Luis Vallejo Castro, Dr Isaac Osahon, Dr Tushar Tyagi, Dr Shan Jian, Dr Piotr Fratczak, Omaro Gonem and Jiaixing He.

Grahame Guilford (DSP Centre Technology Exploitation Manager), was then invited to roundtable discussions at M-Sparc with the Chief Scientific Advisor and colleagues across the University, where he outlined the potential industrial and commercial application of our technologies across sectors, including environmental monitoring and sensing, traffic monitoring and data security. Grahame then concluded his discussions by highlighting our plans to move our research and technologies to market.
