Biography

My first degree was in Botany and Zoology (Lond. Ext) and I first came to work at the University College of North Wales as a Technician in the NERC Unit of Marine Invertebrate Biology. I completed an MSc (Wales) by thesis and became an academic member of staff in the Marine Biology Department in 1983 after a spell as a Scientific Officer in the NERC unit. My present position is as a Reader in the School of Ocean Sciences.

Research Interests

My main research interests lie in the field of population genetics in relation to fisheries and aquaculture and ploidy manipulation of shellfish, but I have also been involved in research into the biology of the larvae of bivalve molluscs and the effects of certain pollutants on them. It is partly the access to high quality small-scale bivalve hatchery facilities at SOS which have enabled me to focus on these fields of research. In association with Dr John Latchford we have set up a dedicated Biotechnology and Genetics Laboratory facility within which research using modern DNA based genetic markers has been conducted. I am particularly interested in the use of microsatellites and non-repetitive nuclear DNA sites as genetic markers in the study of hatchery practice and aquaculture development in bivalves such as oysters and scallops. The domestication of shellfish is at an early stage, and the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and mapping of genetic markers has become an expanding and fruitful field of research at the turn of the century
