Muhammad Ahmer Raza is a PhD researcher in Health Economics at the Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation (CHEME), Bangor University, United Kingdom funded my MRC TMRP (Medical Research Council Trials Methodology Research Partnership). He is a registered pharmacist with a strong interdisciplinary background in clinical pharmacy, pharmacometrics, and pharmacoepidemiology.
His doctoral research, "Developing Linked Pharmacometrics–Pharmacoeconomic Models to Inform Clinical Trial Design," aims to integrate pharmacometric and pharmacoeconomic modelling approaches to evaluate the clinical and economic consequences of medication non-adherence, particularly missed doses of antihypertensive medicines. His work combines systematic evidence synthesis, pharmacometric simulation, and economic evaluation to better understand drug "forgiveness" and to generate evidence that can inform clinical trial design, healthcare policy, and resource allocation. The research seeks to bridge the gap between pharmacological outcomes and health economic decision-making by linking drug exposure, blood pressure response, long-term clinical outcomes, and cost-effectiveness.
Prior to joining Bangor University, Ahmer completed a Master of Clinical Pharmacy at Shandong University, China, funded through the prestigious Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC). His master's research, "Optimal Dose of Meropenem for the Treatment of Neonatal Sepsis: Dosing Guideline Variation and Clinical Practice Deviation," investigated differences between international dosing recommendations and real-world prescribing practices for meropenem in neonates. The study aimed to identify inconsistencies in dosing guidelines and evaluate opportunities to optimise antimicrobial therapy in neonatal sepsis by using primary principles of pharmacometrics, thereby supporting safer and more effective antibiotic use in this highly vulnerable patient population. His master's research was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 82173897), the Young Taishan Scholars Program of Shandong Province, and the Distinguished Young and Middle-aged Scholar of Shandong University. The findings from his research were published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (BJCP).
Ahmer has also collaborated with researchers at Zhengzhou University, China on translational biomedical research. This collaboration resulted in the publication of the study "GSK126, an Inhibitor of the Epigenetic Regulator EZH2, Suppresses Cardiac Fibrosis by Regulating the EZH2–PAX6–CXCL10 Pathway," which investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiac fibrosis and explored the therapeutic potential of epigenetic regulation in cardiovascular disease.
He obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from The University of Faisalabad, Pakistan. During his undergraduate studies, he conducted a research project entitled "Analysis of Various Risk Factors, Causes and Prevention of Breast Cancer in Pakistan." This project examined the epidemiology of breast cancer in the Pakistani population, identified major genetic, environmental, and lifestyle risk factors, and reviewed preventive strategies to improve public awareness and promote early detection. The project strengthened his interest in public health, disease prevention, and evidence-based clinical research.
Ahmer's research interests include pharmacometrics, pharmacoeconomics, health technology assessment, medication adherence, cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, clinical trial methodology, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, model-informed drug development, and quantitative methods for healthcare decision-making. His long-term research goal is to develop integrated modelling approaches that support clinicians, researchers, and policy makers in designing more efficient clinical trials and improving the cost-effective use of medicines.
