Last week the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Centre, in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at Bangor university, welcomed two Year 12 students, Tamzin Willis and Gai Lau, from Ysgol David Hughes in Menai Bridge. The students spent the week taking part in electronics-focused activities as part of the Destination STEM programme, organised by Techniquest.
The placement offered them a fantastic opportunity to explore the field of electronics and communication technologies in a leading research institution recognised for its world-leading research into DSP technologies for advanced future communications networks.
During the week, they developed practical skills such as soldering and using state-of-the-art electronic test equipment. They also completed a mini project to demonstrate the basic principles of optical wireless communications, successfully implementing a system to wirelessly transmit music through free space using visible light. In addition, they attended several research team meetings to observe how a research group operates and had the chance to tour the school’s cleanroom facility to see how organic electronic devices are fabricated.
Both students described the week as extremely enjoyable and interesting, and we hope it has sparked a lasting interest in STEM and inspired them to continue exploring science and technology in the future.
