Discover the miniature forests of Treborth! This is a 1k trail, that's ideal if you want to see over 20 different types of moss in less than 30 minutes.

Our markers and information boards will give you detailed information about the mosses in each location.

There will be a x4 hand lens you can use at each site.

Follow this Trail

Start the walk at the Botanic Garden offices. The walk is about half a mile long. It is an easy walk on level terrain. The grass can sometimes be muddy during winter and in times of heavy rainfall. Places where you can get a closer look at mosses and liverworts are numbered on the map and are marked with a green plastic disc.

Fossil Tree Trail

Come and explore the oldest members of the botanic garden. The trees found on this trail represent species that have survived from ancient times, with little or no evolutionary change.

Their existence in the fossil record for vast periods of time, often dating back to before dinosaurs, is a defining characteristic.

Many of our living fossils are gymnosperms which translates as ‘naked seed’ a characteristic of all plants in this group – get up close and personal!

You can explore the specimens on this trail in any order. Three are located inside the glasshouses, while the rest can be found growing throughout the main garden borders and the arboretum.

Lichen Trail

Uncover the miniature world of lichens on this ½ mile walk. Explore vibrant lichens in all shapes and colours, clinging to rocks, wrapped around tree trunks, and even decorating our benches and roof!

Uncover the fascinating science behind these unique organisms that are part fungus, part algae.

The clean moisture-laden oceanic air provides ideal conditions for lichen growth here. Most lichens also love light. This trail introduces you to the common species of open gardens.

Follow this Trail

Begin your walk at the Botanic Garden offices, next to the sycamore tree covered in lichen in the main car park. The trail is approximately half a mile long and follows a flat, easy path. Please note that the grass may become muddy in winter or after heavy rain.

Mindfulness Trail

Mindfulness means paying attention to what is happening when it is happening – in the moment.

The trail encourages you to notice the sights, sounds, smells, and sensations of the natural world.

Nature has a grounding effect. The trail will help you to return to your body and the now – especially if you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or disconnected.

Follow this Trail

Begin your journey in the Chinese Garden, where you'll find the mindfulness trail information board. Along the path, there are several peaceful spots to sit and reflect. Both coloured trails offer gentle, level walks suitable for all abilities. An optional audio guide is available for those who prefer a narrated experience.
