Overview

The course comprises a balanced introduction to chemistry underpinning Environmental Science. It aims to give you a sufficient chemical background to enable you to confidently study your main chosen subject area. This course is taught mainly by lectures, supported by problem solving and laboratory sessions.

Key topics taught in the module may include: The structure of atoms and atomic bonding, how to describe the amount of substances, acids and bases, fundamental reaction kinetics, and fundamental organic chemistry.

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -Threshold (40% - 59%). Knowledge and understanding of the content covered in the course is basic; Problems of a routine nature are generally adequately solved; Transferable skills are at a basic level

-good -Good (60% - 69%). Knowledge base covers all essential aspects of subject matter dealt with in the programme and shows good evidence of enquiry beyond this. Conceptual understanding is good. Problems of a familiar and unfamiliar nature are solved in a logical manner; solutions are generally correct and acceptable. Performance in transferable skills is sound and shows no significant deficiencies.

-excellent -Excellent (70% or higher). Knowledge base is extensive and extends well beyond the work covered in the programme. Conceptual understanding is outstanding. Problems of a familiar and unfamiliar nature are solved with efficiency and accuracy; problem-solving procedures are adjusted to the nature of the problem. Performance in transferable skills is generally very good

Learning Outcomes

• Calculate the amount of substance from a variety of chemical information.

• Demonstrate an understanding of acids and bases and fundamental chemical kinetics.

• Describe key concepts in chemistry, including atomic structure, bonding, periodicity, and oxidation states.

• Identify functional groups in organic compounds, name organic compounds using IUPAC nomenclature, draw chemical structures and demonstrate knowledge of basic chemical reactions associated with important organic functional groups.
