Overview
This module offers an integrative exploration of mindfulness through both its contemplative origins and its contemporary neuroscientific understanding. Drawing on Early Buddhist psychological frameworks and modern cognitive neuroscience, students will investigate how ancient practices and modern science converge in explaining the mechanisms and benefits of mindfulness.
From the Buddhist perspective, the module examines the historical and philosophical foundations of mindfulness as they emerged within Early Buddhist traditions. Students will trace how these contemplative practices and concepts have informed contemporary contemplative interventions such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Critical attention will be given to the dialogue and tensions between the spiritual and ethical dimensions of Buddhism and the secular, clinical adaptations of mindfulness. Students will be encouraged to engage reflectively with these intersections, considering how a deeper appreciation of the Buddhist psychological background can enrich both personal practice and professional application.
From the neuroscientific perspective, the module investigates the brain mechanisms underlying mindfulness through exploring the effects of mindfulness on attention regulation, emotion regulation and stress. In addition, the module will explore the impact of mindfulness on the developing brain. Students will learn about the latest developments within the field of contemplative neuroscience and develop skills to critically evaluate the quality and value of this research.
This module explores the intersection between Buddhist psychology, contemplative traditions, and modern neuroscience. It examines how classical Buddhist understandings of mind, awareness, and suffering have influenced contemporary mindfulness-based interventions such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Students will investigate the historical origins of these approaches, considering the part played by Buddhist thought and meditative practice in their evolution, and how these have been adapted within clinical and scientific contexts. The course invites students to reflect critically on the boundaries between the religious and spiritual context of Buddhism and the modern psychological and neuroscientific study of mindfulness.
Through engagement with both textual and empirical sources, students will explore the neural and psychological mechanisms underpinning contemplative practice. Topics will include neuroplasticity and cognitive neuroscience methods, mechanisms of mindfulness from psychological and neurocognitive perspectives, mindfulness and attention, mindfulness and emotion regulation, mindfulness and the stress response, mindfulness and the developing brain and global shifts in neural activity associated with contemplative states. The module also considers how an understanding of contemplative practice from both Buddhist and neuroscientific perspectives can deepen appreciation of its clinical and personal applications.
Students will be encouraged to investigate and critically appraise the growing body of research on the brain and mindfulness, evaluating how contemplative frameworks align with or challenge scientific interpretations of cognition and consciousness. They will gain familiarity with key neuroscientific findings on attention, emotion regulation, and self-awareness, as well as an understanding of methodological approaches used to study meditation and brain function. Throughout, emphasis will be placed on integrating conceptual, experiential, and empirical dimensions of contemplative practice, fostering an approach that is both scholarly and reflective.
Assessment Strategy
Threshold 50% - Attempts to address the assignment question directly, though may include some irrelevancies or omissions. Demonstrates a generally accurate but limited understanding of the Buddhist psychological and contemplative foundations of mindfulness-based approaches, drawing mainly on lectures and core readings. Shows basic awareness of how contemplative practices (e.g., meditation, compassion, or attention training) have been discussed in psychological and neuroscientific contexts, but analysis is descriptive or incomplete. Displays limited awareness of brain-based mechanisms (such as attention control, emotional regulation, or neuroplasticity) associated with mindfulness and related contemplative practices. Argumentation may be loosely structured or reliant on assertion rather than evidence. Critical appraisal is minimal, but some attempt at scholarly objectivity and reflection is made. Essays and/or presentations demonstrate basic preparation and limited integration of contemplative or neuroscientific perspectives.
Good 60%: Addresses all or most aspects of the assignment question clearly and accurately. Demonstrates sound understanding of the relationship between Buddhist psychology, contemplative traditions, and modern mindfulness-based approaches. Shows familiarity with relevant neuroscientific and psychological research exploring the effects of contemplative practices on attention, emotion regulation, and well-being. Presents a coherent and mostly well-structured argument supported by appropriate sources, including reading beyond core materials. Demonstrates balanced critical appraisal and the ability to integrate conceptual, experiential, and empirical perspectives. Shows awareness of how contemplative frameworks inform mindfulness theory and practice, and how neuroscientific evidence contributes to understanding underlying mechanisms. The work is thoughtful, organised, and demonstrates genuine engagement and curiosity. The research explored is methodologically sound, showing some originality and a meaningful link between contemplative theory and empirical or brain-based evidence.
Distinction: 70%+ Offers a sophisticated, comprehensive, and original critical review that integrates Buddhist psychology, contemplative traditions, mindfulness-based interventions, and neuroscientific research with depth and precision. Demonstrates excellent understanding of both the experiential and theoretical foundations of contemplative practice, critically evaluating key texts and current empirical findings. Shows nuanced insight into neuroscientific evidence (e.g., neuroplasticity, large-scale brain networks, embodied cognition, or predictive processing) and its relationship to contemplative and therapeutic processes. Presents a fluent, coherent, and logically progressive argument that synthesises diverse perspectives across contemplative studies, psychology, and neuroscience. The work displays originality, intellectual independence, and critical awareness of methodological and conceptual limitations within the field. Writing is precise, engaging, and scholarly. The research presented and explored is innovative, demonstrating advanced methodological rigour, integration of contemplative frameworks with neuroscientific inquiry.
