Ffeithiau’r Modiwl
Rhedir gan School of Arts, Culture and Language
40.000 Credydau neu 20.000 Credyd ECTS
Semester 1 a 2
Trefnydd: Dr Sarah Cooper
Amcanion cyffredinol
Mae’r traethawd hir 7000 o eiriau yn caniatáu i fyfyriwr adnabod cwestiwn ymchwil a datblygu darn sylweddol o ymchwil annibynnol er mwyn ateb y cwestiwn hwnnw. Bydd pob myfyriwr yn cael arolygwr, sef aelod o staff sydd gyda’r diddordebau ymchwil sydd yn cyfateb fwyaf i bwnc y myfyriwr. Bydd yr arolygwr wedyn yn trafod gyda’r myfyriwr er mwyn gwellau’u gallu i ffocysu terfynau, methodoleg a chynnwys y traethawd hir, gan roi cyngor drwy gydol cyfnod yr ymchwil hwn. Bydd y traethawd hir yn ddarn sylweddol o waith ysgrifenedig a fydd yn galluogi’r myfyriwr i ddatblygu prosiect ymchwil annibynnol. Bydd cyfran o’r addysgu yn cael ei wneud drwy gyfrwng y Saesneg, yn enwedig tua dechrau’r modiwl, ond bydd y rhannau rhai drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg, a caiff y myfyriwr ysgrifennu’r traethawd hir mewn Cymraeg neu Saesneg.
Amcanion:
• Caniatáu myfyrwyr i ddatblygu darn sylweddol o ddysgu ac ymchwil annibynnol ar ffurf estynedig
• Cadarnháu sgiliau allweddol mewn ymchwil, dadansoddi critigol ac ysgrifennu academaidd
• Cael myfyrwyr i ddatblygu prosiect ymchwil ymarferol eu hunain, adnabod a defnyddio cronfa berthnasol o dystiolaeth, a chynhyrchu dadl estynedig ar ffurf ysgrifenedig.
The 7000 word dissertation allows a student to identify a research question, and develop a significant piece of individual research in order to address the question. Each student is assigned a supervisor, a member of staff who has research interests most closely connected to the student’s topic. The supervisor will liaise with the student to enhance their ability to focus the scope, methodology and content of the dissertation, and give advice throughout the duration of this research. The dissertation will be a substantial piece of written work, enabling students to develop an independent research project. A portion of the teaching, particularly towards the start of the module, will be through the medium of English, but some parts will be through the medium of Welsh, and the student may complete the dissertation through Welsh or English.
Aims:
• Allow students to complete a major piece of independent learning and research in extended form
• Reinforces key skills of research, critical analysis and academic writing
• Require students to formulate a practical research project of their own; identify and utilise a relevant body of evidence; and produce a sustained argument in written form.
Cynnwys cwrs
Gall testunau amrywio, yn dibynnu ar ddewisiadau myfyrwyr a rhaglen y radd. Maent yn ymwneud ag ystod eang o faterion mewn ieithyddiaeth, ond rhaid iddynt fod yn berthnasol i raglen y radd y mae'r myfyriwr wedi cofrestru arni. Bydd testunau'n cynnwys, ymhlith eraill, ymchwil mewn Iaith Saesneg/Cymraeg, Dwyieithrwydd, Caffael Iaith, Datblygiad Iaith, a dysgu Saesneg fel iaith dramor (TEFL). Bydd y rhan fwyaf o bynciau yn cynnwys casglu a dadansoddi data, ond ni fydd y posibilrwydd o ddefnyddio data presennol neu wneud adolygiad estynedig o lenyddiaeth yn cael ei eithrio os yw'n berthnasol i'r pwnc, ac y cytunir ar hynny â'r goruchwyliwr. Mae’r Ysgol yn gwneud pob ymdrech i oruchwylio unrhyw bwnc y mae myfyrwyr yn ei ddewis, ond yn yr achos prin nad ydy’r Ysgol â’r gallu i oruchwylio pwnc, yna gofynir i fyfyrwyr ddewis pwnc arall.
Er hynny, bydd pynciau'n cynnwys:
• Sut i ffurfio cwestiwn ymchwil.
• Cynhyrchu cais ymchwil.
• Methodoleg ymchwil.
• Ystadegau.
Dim ond myfyrwyr sydd eisiau casglu data yn ymwneud â phlant neu oedolion sy’n agored i niwed sydd angen prawf DBS (gwelwch isod).
Topics vary depending on individual students choices and degree programme. They relate to a wide array of issues in linguistics but must be relevant to the degree programme that the student is registered on. Topics will include, but not be confined to, research in English/Welsh Language Studies, Bilingualism, Language Acquisition, Language Development, and Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Most topics will involve the collection and analysis of data, but the possibility of utilising exiting data or doing an extended literature review is not precluded if relevant to the topic and agreed with the supervisor. The School makes every effort to supervise the topic of the students' choice, however, on the rare occasions that the School does not have the capacity to supervise a topic, students will be advised to choose a new topic.
However, classes will include:
• How to formulate a research question.
• Producing a research proposal.
• Research methodologies.
• Statistics.
Only students wishing to collect data involving children or vulnerable adults will need a DBS check (see below).
