Overview
This module aims to equip aspiring educators with a robust and integrated set of professional skills essential for effective teaching and leadership in education. Focusing on the development of personal and pedagogical competencies in the Welsh language, numeracy, and digital literacy, with an emphasis on their effective application in the classroom to support and enhance learners’ skills. The module also supports students in becoming reflective practitioners and innovative leaders capable of driving change and improvement in their educational settings.
The module encourages critical engagement with professional standards, fostering a commitment to professional learning, collaboration, and innovation in education. It promotes the development of confident, reflective practitioners who can use the Welsh language meaningfully in their professional roles, and who understand its significance within the educational, cultural, and social landscape of Wales.
This module is organised around five key areas of professional skill development, with content delivered through university-based sessions, school-based practice, and independent study. Each area supports the development of confident, reflective, and innovative educators equipped to meet the needs of the Curriculum for Wales.

Assessment Strategy
Threshold (C) All learning outcomes will have been produced to a satisfactory level. Knowledge and understanding of the module content will be supported by a satisfactory range of theory, practice and research literature. Candidates will have demonstrated satisfactory evidence of critical analysis when reflecting on teaching and learning. Students will have developed satisfactory study skills and will be able to communicate to a satisfactory standard in professional and academic contexts. Good (B) Most learning outcomes will have been produced at a good level. Excellence in some learning outcomes may compensate for satisfactory attainment in others. A good knowledge and understanding of the module content will be supported by a good range of theory, practice and research literature. Candidates will provide good critical analysis when reflecting on a significant range of teaching and learning styles. Students will have developed good study skills and will be able to communicate to a good standard in professional and academic contexts. Excellent (A) Most learning outcomes will have been met to an excellent level and all learning outcomes will be at least good. A deep knowledge and understanding of the module content will be supported by an extensive range of theory, practice and research literature. Candidates will provide excellent critical analysis when reflecting on a wide range of teaching and learning approaches. Students will have developed excellent study skills and will be able to communicate to an excellent standard in professional and academic contexts.
Learning Outcomes
- Articulate and critically evaluate professional skills by selecting and analysing pedagogical approaches to teach literacy, numeracy, and digital competence, enhancing learning, supporting assessment, and contributing to leadership and collaboration.
- Critically engage with research and evidence to inform practice, reflecting on and evaluating the impact of pedagogical decisions on learner outcomes and professional development.
- Critically evaluate key strategic priorities in Welsh-medium education and provision, focusing on bilingual approaches, Welsh in the Curriculum for Wales, and effective pedagogy to develop Welsh literacy skills for L2 learners.
- Evidence enhanced Welsh language competency by analysing entry audit outcomes to inform exit levels and applying these skills to develop learners’ literacy in line with the Welsh Language Competency Framework.
