Studying Psychology at Bangor: The Advantages

The University City of Bangor and Bangor University School of Psychology are proven attractions for students. Not only Bangor, but also its locality, is infectious: the Snowdonia National Park, beautiful beaches, and medieval castles are all close by. As for the School, external examiners are convinced of the high quality teaching that the School provides. Psychology scholars the world over are attracted to the School and its locality.

‘Excellent’ Teaching Quality

Our lecturers care about students and want them to learn, so we teach in a variety of ways, using a combination of formal lectures, workshops, practicals, and small group work. Similarly, we offer a range of assessment formats - essays, lab reports, orals, multiple choice exams, and standard exams so that everyone gets the opportunity to ‘shine’. We also have a dedicated Teaching Team to focus on ensuring high quality teaching and pastoral care is available to all our students.

We believe it is this focus on teaching that underpins our National Student Survey results which, year on year, place us towards the very top for 'student satisfaction'.

Excellence in Research

The high quality teaching is a reflection of the high quality of the School's research. The School is rated as being in the top 7 UK psychology departments for research power; with more than double the national average of "World Leading" research output and 65% of the total departmental research output being rated in the top two categories of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise . Furthermore, many of our researchers work alongside external agencies, and are able to bring industry expertise into the learning experience of our students.

Commitment to our Students

While we are an institution with an international reputation for research in many fields, we also have a commitment to excellence in our teaching and support for students.

Here’s what our external assessors have to say …

" Staff are experts in their fields, enthusiastic, keen to bring students into the research culture of psychology, and extraordinarily well-equipped to do so."

"The standard of course materials made available to students is the highest I have seen in my experience of several psychology departments"

And here’s what some of our past students have had to say:

" The psychology degree I gained at Bangor provided me with a wide range of skills which I found to be very beneficial in acquiring employment and also in the workplace."

"I had a wonderful time at Bangor. The Psychology department is so friendly, caring and supportive of its students, and the course is excellent"
