How Can You Help Before Results Day?
Being prepared can make a big difference. Encourage early research:
- Explore subjects they’d enjoy
- Look at our undergraduate course pages
- Think about the accommodation options and student life
- Have key details ready e.g. UCAS ID
How Can You Help On Results Day?
You can support them by:
- Helping to prepare what to say and know which courses they are interested in
- Making sure they have their UCAS ID, grades and qualifications to hand
- Writing down key details during calls
- Offering encouragement and setting up a quiet space for calls
What Happens On Results Day?
Your child may not have got the grades or points score that they needed, but their Firm or Insurance choice university may still decide to accept them onto the course. Contact them first and do not just assume that they are in Clearing. If they decide not to accept your child, or if they are not holding offers at any institution, they are eligible to apply for a place through Clearing.
Your child's UCAS application will state ‘You are in Clearing’ or ‘Clearing has started’. If they are in Clearing, they must contact universities directly to enquire about available places on their courses and whether they meet their requirements.
Contacting Bangor University Through Clearing
- In the run up to Clearing and during the A-Level results period, you can discuss your options by contacting the Clearing Helpline on 0800 085 1818.
- During the A-Level results period, you can also discuss your options by contacting us over Live Chat.
- The Online Clearing Application Form is an alternative way of applying for a course through Clearing.
What Happens During a Call or Chat?
When your child calls the Clearing Helpline or joins a Live Chat they will:
- Talk to a friendly member of the Clearing team
- Discuss their results and course interests
- If successful, they will receive a verbal offer, followed by confirmation through email.
What Happens Next?
Encourage them to:
- Take a moment to reflect and think about what will make them happy before accepting
- Visit us if possible - we have a Clearing Visit Day and Clearing Open Day
Once your child has received the offer of a place through Clearing by email and has decided to choose Bangor University:
- They need to add Bangor University as their Clearing choice on UCAS
- Bangor will then confirm their place
- They will be e-mailed with information on how to apply for accommodation
- They can visit us on a Clearing Visit Day or come to a Clearing Open Day.
Clearing - Parents FAQs
Clearing is how universities fill any remaining course places after results day. If your child doesn’t have a confirmed place or decides to change direction, they can contact Bangor University directly to discuss available options and potentially secure a new offer.
This usually involves:
- Checking available courses online
- Contacting us via the Clearing Helpline or Clearing Live Chat, or filling in the online Clearing form
- Receiving a decision based on results and availability.
When your child contacts Bangor University via the Clearing Helpline or Clearing Live Chat, they’ll speak to staff members who are responsible for assessing grades, checking course availability, and making offers. In some cases, if needed, they may consult academic staff, but most decisions are made during the call or over Live Chat.
A Clearing call is usually short and straightforward. The staff member will ask for:
- Exam results
- UCAS ID (if available)
- The course they’re interested in
They’ll then confirm whether your child meets the requirements of the course and if so, offers are made on the spot.
If your child didn't get on to their original choice course at Bangor, they may be offered an alternative course. If that's the case, it will be shown in their UCAS Hub account. They can accept the alternative course offer on UCAS Hub. If they wish to discuss their options, they can contact the Clearing Helpline or Clearing Live Chat.
It will not be a formal interview, but it helps if your child:
- Knows which course subject or course they are interested in
- Have their results to hand and know which qualifications the results are for
- Be prepared to ask any questions they have about the Clearing process, the University or course,
Yes. If your child changes their mind, they can decline their confirmed place on UCAS Hub and enter Clearing to explore other options. This is called 'self-release into Clearing'.
Clearing is a fast-moving process, especially on results day. Course availability can change as students accept offers. That’s why it’s important to:
- Research options in advance
- Act promptly once results are released
Parents can support by helping their child:
- Research alternative courses or universities
- Make a shortlist of options
- Keep important details ready (results, UCAS ID, notes)
Being prepared helps reduce stress and improves decision-making on the day.
No. Clearing is a flexible route, not a last resort. Many students use Clearing because they:
- Did better than expected and want to aim higher
- Changed their mind about course or location
- Are considering university later in the application cycle
- Are returning to education or changing careers as a mature student
