Engage – a series of lectures on a range of Computing, Engineering and Design topics, organised by Bangor University's School of Computer Science and Engineering.
Introduction to materials selection for fusion
This talk will present an introduction to nuclear fusion, the fusion landscape and design of a typical fusion power plant. It will introduce the challenges of materials selection for the extreme environments and compatibility challenges in this industry. Case studies in materials selection for the breeder blanket, and recent experimental and simulation results on this topic from the NFI at Dean Street will be presented.
Megan Leyland: I am a PhD researcher in the NFi in the School of Computer Science, and a Corrosion Scientist at UKAEA. My research interests are in the chemistry of lithium for fusion, and materials compatibility and corrosion. My current work focuses on chemical interactions in liquid lithium as a function of impurities.
