A Level Results Day and Clearing Advice
What happens when I get my exam results?
All applications for undergraduate courses in the UK are processed through UCAS. When you apply to University, you must create an account with UCAS Track and you'll be able to log-in throughout the year to see the status of your application.
On Results Day you should log on to UCAS Track to check your status. If you have been accepted at your Firm Choice, you will see a message on Track saying that your place with them is confirmed. If you haven't been accepted at your Firm Choice, but have been accepted at your Insurance Choice you will see this on Track.
What happens if I don't get the grades?
If you have not been successful in gaining a place at either your Firm or Insurance Choice, you will be automatically placed in Clearing. When you log in to UCAS Track, you will be notified that you are in Clearing and you will see an option to add a university as your 'Clearing Choice’. You should not select a university as your Clearing Choice without firstly speaking to the university.
How Clearing works
Once you are in Clearing, you must contact universities directly to ask about available places on courses. The UCAS website will have a list of all universities with Clearing vacancies. Individual universities will also have information about courses available through Clearing on their own websites.
Before getting in touch with universities to ask about Clearing places, you should have your UCAS personal ID number, Clearing number, course codes, email address and phone number to hand. You will also be asked to provide your A-Level results, or equivalent qualifications such as BTECs, as well as any relevant GCSE results.
If a university offers you a place through Clearing, to accept it you should select that university as your Clearing Choice through UCAS Track. You can contact as many universities as you like to ask about places on courses, but you can only accept one Clearing offer.
