‘A Moral Crusade or Nothing? The Labour Party, Overseas Aid and Questions of Morality’
Dr Charlotte Lydia Riley - Prifysgol Southampton
This paper explores post-war Labour Party thinking, rhetoric and policies around overseas aid and development. From Wilson to Kinnock to Blair, it argues that morality and questions of principle are consistently centred in the party's approach to the developing world, but that these questions have often been omitted from discussions of Labour's political thought in this period. Taking the idea of the party as a 'moral crusade' seriously, the paper argues that aid and development is a space in which these questions around ethics and identity can be fruitfully explored.
