Lee CarsonLee CarsonThree graduates from Bangor University's MA Filmmaking course are celebrating this month as productions they've worked on reach the shortlist for a BAFTA Cymru Award.

Lee Carson contributed as crew on the major BBC adaptation of Bangor Honorary Fellow Phillip Pullman's acclaimed triology His Dark Materials, which is nominated for Best Television Drama amongst other categories

Rory Farmer and Robert Zyborski both contributed on camera to critically acclaimed Best Factual Series nominee, Ysgol Ni: Maesincla which followed pupils and teachers at the Caernarfon school in a heartwarming fly on the wall documentary.

Lee Carson, who went on from the Filmmaking MA to work on His Dark Materials said,

"The MA filmmaking degree at Bangor University allowed me not only to build further on my knowledge of practical filmmaking, but more importantly gave me a much-needed insight into how the creative industries function in the real world outside university.

"The opportunities I gained from studying on the course were fundamental in allowing me to later work in high end television both around the UK and also internationally."

Rory FarmerRory FarmerRory Farmer added, "The Filmmaking MA at Bangor gave me the confidence and the opportunity to develop my skills. Without it, I wouldn't have made the contacts which have allowed me to go on and work as a cameraman for this brilliant documentary. I think the MA grounds you in both fiction and factual and prepares you very well for the industry."

Joanna Wright, Senior Lecturer in Media in the School of Music and Media said,

It's great to see former students from our course represented so well in the industry in Wales and beyond, and a testament to the talented students that come to Bangor to study film production. We pride ourselves on the scope of the MA, from concept and creative development through the filmmaking process and on to distribution and marketing. A special mention also to one of our visiting speakers in Sound, Alex Ashcroft, who's nominated for Best Sound for the multi-award-winning feature film The Last Tree."

The winners of this year's British Academy Cymru Awards 2020, hosted by Alex Jones, will be announced at the digital ceremony on 25 October, 19:00 GMT on BAFTA social channels.
