Course Length: 2 years 9 months Part-time

This part-time programme commissioned by the Welsh Government is an exciting career development opportunity for Healthcare Support Workers (HCSWs) employed within NHS Wales. This programme enables eligible candidates to develop their careers to become both registered nurses and gain a degree through part time study. HCSWs employed by BCUHB can undertake the programme on a seconded basis. Futhermore, this opportunity is also available to HCSWs who work within GP practices, where the GP and Local Health Board have agreed to support the staff member to undertake the programme. (Contractual agreements must be negotiated locally in this instance).

The programme runs over two years and 9 months on a part time basis. Students undertake the programme for 23 hours per week and spend the remainder of their weekly contracted hours working as a HCSW in their substantive employment. For example if full time, individuals undertaking the programme will become student nurses for 23 hours per week and work the remaining 14.5 hours in their usual HCSW role.

The taught elements of this course will be delivered at University campuses in Bangor and/or Wrexham. Clinical practice placements will be arranged across BCUHB.

Cynnwys y Cwrs

You will learn through a combination of theoretical modules and a broad range of clinical practice placements to enable you to achieve the required NMC standards to become a registered nurse. Theoretical elements of the programme are delivered using a range of innovative teaching methods such as interactive lectures, tutorials, case studies, workshops, digital forums, student presentations and enquiry based learning.

You will study subjects to develop your skills and professional behaviours, values and attitudes expected of a registered nurse, to ensure the safety and protection of people of all ages, their carers and families. You will initially be expected to commit to employment within BCUHB as a registered nurse post qualifying for a minimum of two years, subject to successful completion of the course and your registration with the NMC. Allocation to vacant registered nursing posts will take place in line the graduate recruitment process at the time of your course completion.

  • Completion of level 4 Cert HE/FdSc Healthcare Practice at Coleg Llandrillo, including the clinical portfolio which evidences the hours and competencies achieved in the relevant field of practice. 
  • GCSE grade C or above in English/Welsh and mathematics or equivalent.
  • Up to date mandatory training in current post.
  • Signed approval from manager and authorisation from BCUHB (or independent GP practice).
  • Safe-medicate at a minimum 80% pass grade. (This can be undertaken as part of the selection process if required).
  • New DBS check paid for by the applicant, as he/she will be representing Bangor University while he/she is a student. The student is also expected to register with the update service when applying for a DBS. If he/she has a noted conviction he/she will be asked to attend a BCUHB/Bangor University panel to consider his/her suitability for the programme. 
  • Satisfactory occupational health clearance.

Please note that any offers made during the selection process will be subject to candidates having achieved all the required criteria above.

Costau’r Cwrs

  • Tuition fees are paid by NHS Wales through the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) – Managers will have to inform their finance departments as soon as their staff have been awarded a place in order that invoices are raised.
  • Students who undertake this programme will remain employed with BCUHB for the duration of the course.
  • BCUHB will continue to pay the HCSW an annual salary equal to their current substantive salary for the duration the course. The HCSW will continue to pay their usual deductions from their salary, such as pension contributions, tax and National Insurance contributions.
  • BCUHB will be reimbursed by NHS Wales/NWSSP for 16 hours, and BCUHB will fund the remaining 7 hours for the duration of the course.

Please note: If you work outside BCUHB your individual terms and conditions must be agreed with your employer prior to commencement on the programme.

There are also some common additional costs that are likely to arise for students on all courses, for example if you attend your Graduation Ceremony, there will be a cost for gown hire (£25-£75) and cost for guest tickets (£12 each).

Course-specific additional costs

Depending on the course you are studying, there may be additional course-specific costs that you will be required to meet. These fall into three categories:

1. Mandatory Costs: these are related to a particular core or compulsory module that you’ll be required to complete to achieve your qualification e.g. compulsory field trips, uniforms for students on placement, DBS Check.
2. Necessarily Incurred Costs: these may not be experienced by all students, and will vary depending on the course e.g. professional body membership, travel to placements, specialist software, personal safety equipment.
3. Optional Costs: these depend on your choice of modules or activity and they are shown to give you an indication of the optional costs that may arise to make sure your choice is as informed as possible. These can include graduation events for your course, optional field trips and Welcome Week trips.

Mandatory Costs:

  • DBS checks for all Bachelor of Nursing fields of study
  • Registration on completion of study with NMC.

Necessarily Incurred Costs:

  • Subscription to Union membership eg RCN or Unison to provided insurance indemnity and support.
  • HCSWs will only be reimbursed for travel costs when travelling to clinical placements/higher education institution within Wales that exceeds the daily cost of travel between their home and work base.
  • Students will be expected to pay for any additional uniforms if they require them.
  • Students will need to purchase printing credits for their personal use.

Optional Costs:

  • Graduation gown.
  • Subsistence for optional placements taken by students.
  • Cost to conferences is covered if study leave is authorised.
  • Costs to celebration events is covered if student is asked to attend.

Notes: All assignments are submitted electronically. The printing and binding of dissertations and thesis applies only to Post Graduate students.
