Welsh Courses For Adults
Learn Welsh – North West (or DCGO - Dysgu Cymraeg – Gogledd Orllewin) at Bangor University provides Welsh courses for adults across Gwynedd, Conwy and Anglesey, as well as online, on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh.
With over 2,000 learners enrolling on our courses each year, DCGO plays a central role in the development of the Welsh language in north-west Wales (Anglesey, Conwy and Gwynedd), making a significant contribution to the Welsh Government’s Cymraeg 2050 strategy – One Million Speakers.
Excellence | Expertise | Experience
In 2022, DCGO’s provision was awarded an ‘Excellent’ grade by Estyn, the highest possible award. Estyn praised the service’s strong vision, the quality of teaching, staff commitment, and the way learners gain confidence and use their Welsh in the community.
DCGO’s expertise extends beyond the classroom, including developing learning resources, training tutors, and contributing to innovative research in the field.
With 50 years of experience, DCGO continues to go from strength to strength, supporting a growing number of new speakers to use Welsh confidently, socially and professionally.
Welsh Courses For Workforces
Learn Welsh – North West (DCGO) offers a range of Welsh courses for workforces across the region, supporting staff to develop their language skills at all levels. Provision includes courses tailored for employees in the Health and Care sector, Local Authorities and the Education Workforce. In addition, DCGO contributes to strengthening the Welsh language skills of students training to become future teachers.
Training For Tutors
Dechrau Dysgu: Level 4 CBAC Certificate for Welsh Language Tutors
Learn Welsh - North West is responsible for the national ‘Dechrau Dysgu’ qualification. The aim of ‘Dechrau Dysgu’ is to develop the skills required by a new tutor when beginning to teach Welsh for adults. Tutors receive practical guidance to develop effective teaching skills and to understand language-learning principles. Learners must apply their skills and knowledge in teaching practice, and their achievement is assessed through observation, reflection and assignments. Particular attention is given to teaching Entry-level learners within this qualification.
The qualification is delivered by Learn Welsh North West in collaboration with Learn Welsh Ceredigion – Powys – Carmarthenshire, and through agreement with CBAC and the National Centre for Learning Welsh.
