Child field UCAS Applicants

Congratulations on receiving your invite for an interview with the Children and Young Peoples’ Nursing programme at Bangor University.

There will be one full day of online interviews with a combination of group interviews and individual interviews. You will be observed throughout the whole day for both the group interview and individual interview.

The first stage will be a group interview, you will receive an invitation via Zoom.
Zoom works on many IT platforms such as your mobile telephone, PC, and other electronic devices.

The Zoom link and allocated date and time of your interview will be included in the email and your UCAS Track page. The group interview and welcome talk will last approximately 1 hour and will be in the morning. All you need to do is click on the correct link, having ensured you have a camera and microphone which works, so that we can see and hear you.

You will then be interviewed individually by some of the Children’s and Young People’s Nursing lecturers from Bangor University. You will be informed of your individual interview time slot at the beginning of the group interview. This will be a short interview of approximately 30 minutes and will be in the afternoon.

It is important that you practice accessing Zoom prior to your interview, learn how to access and use the chat function. Practice with family and friends, this link provides some information about basic functions.

Selection Phase 1

A short talk at the start will provide information about the School of Health Sciences, our selection processes and how you will receive your offer if you are successful at interview.  We will also provide information about the course, our expectations of you, your placements which make up 50% of the course, DBS requirements and occupational health requirements.

We will ask permission to take a screenshot of you holding your photo ID evidence that will then be stored in a secure folder.

This will then be followed by a group interview where you will be given the opportunity to meet the Children and Young people’s Nursing lecturers and our Practice Partners from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. You will be discussing as a group a scenario about a dilemma posed on the day. We will be looking for good communication skills,  compassion and team working qualities when working with Children and their families. You will then be provided with an opportunity to discuss an aspect of Children and Young People’s Nursing and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the role of the Children and Young People’s Nurse.

Preparing for your interview

  • You will need to access your personal UCAS Track page for the details of your interview and you must confirm your attendance through UCAS Track.  If you don’t, your offer of interview will be withdrawn.
  • The interviews are value based which means they encompass the values and qualities of a Children's Nurse. In preparation for your interview, we recommend you read around topics pertinent to Children and Young People’s Nursing.
  • You will be expected to communicate within a group and actively contribute throughout the discussion.
  • If you are unable to attend on the date you have been allocated, please inform us through UCAS, interview dates will only be changed in exceptional circumstances.

Selection Phase 2

The second phase of selection will involve an individual interview after the group interview. This will be the same day as the group interview. You will be given your individual time of interview at the beginning of the group interview. When you attend your individual short interview, it will provide you with an opportunity to discuss an aspect of Children and Young People’s Nursing and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the role of the Children and Young People’s Nurse. The interviews are value based which means they encompass the values and qualities of a Children's Nurse.  In preparation for your interview, we recommend you read around topics pertinent to Children and Young People’s Nursing.

This will be followed by an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.

Preparing for your interview

  • You will need to access your personal UCAS Track page for the details of your interview and you must confirm your attendance through UCAS Track.  If you don’t, your offer of interview will be withdrawn.
  • You need to practice using Zoom, look for a quiet place to have your interview where you won’t be interrupted and has good lighting.
  • You will be allocated a specific time and date for the interview.
  • During the online interview process, you will be asked to have your camera and microphone on.
  • If you are unable to attend on the date you have been allocated, please inform us through UCAS, interview dates will only be changed in exceptional circumstances.
  • You are required to present your proof of identity to the interviewer and confirm your evidence of numeracy and literacy.

We can offer you an interview through the medium of Welsh should you prefer and the date for this will be in February. We can assure you that a later interview date will not disadvantage candidates and that all applicants will be treated with equity as per Bangor University policy.


 

Child field applicants-please note our numbers are specified by the commissioners and a place is dependent on a commissioned bursary place being available.

Please note that due to the volume of applications received for the Child field programme, If you are unable to attend the scheduled interview date and need to change, there may be a delay in processing an alternative date.

You will be informed of the outcome of your interview through UCAS track therefore, it is important that you check your account regularly.

Your interview will not be able to proceed unless you have the following documents:

  • Passport or driving licence as proof of identification

Top tips

  • Preparation is key – Familiarise yourself with the content of your CV and personal statement, research the programme, the Children and Young People’s Nursing career and the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s Code of Conduct.
  • Technicalities- Please ensure that you have reliable internet connection, and your device is compatible with Zoom prior to the interview. We ask that you have a working camera and microphone and that you are based in a suitable and appropriate environment.
  • Support each other – Children and Young People’s Nurses need to be able to work well within a team, verbal and non-verbal communication skills and the ability to listen to others is key. Please remember that nurses are approachable, friendly individuals but also have the confidence to challenge or ask questions.
  • Attire- This is an interview for a professional course, therefore, please remember to dress in smart, comfortable clothes.
  • Relax- We want you to do well, please address the person asking the question, be engaging, warm and respectful to each other…..and don’t forget to smile!
