Encouraging men to consider a career in nursing: the #NurseFirstBU
The #NurseFirstBU project team is based at the Bangor University School of Health Sciences.
The aim of this student led project is to encourage conversations, raise awareness and promote nursing as a career choice for all by moving beyond gender stereotypesand focusing on the profession.
It focuses around the hashtag #NurseFirstBU, designed and promoted by our student project team members, highlighting that in nursing, professionalism, care and compassion is key and not gender.
Currently less than 11% of nurses and applicants to nursing courses are men. This shortage in men applying to nursing means that we are losing out on many talented future nurses.
At a time when the NHS is facing more challenges than ever, we need to address and tackle gender inequality within nursing.
