Overview
This module will start with an introduction to the history of modern policing in England and Wales and help to develop a baseline understanding of how the service functions. The role that police services play in the working of the criminal justice system will be discussed and well as some very practical policing skills such as stop and search and powers of arrest.
Practically, students will learn core communication and problem-solving skills; examine core principles and ideas relating to working as a team, upholding professional standards and strategies for maintaining wellbeing and resilience. They will learn the bases for professional decision making in policing such as the national decision model, the use of discretion and the impact of bias on decision making.

Learning Outcomes
- Discuss the importance of valuing difference and inclusion in a policing context and how to demonstrate effective leadership and team-working.
- Critically examine how to apply effective communication techniques including conflict management in a policing context.
- Critically examine the importance of ethical and professional standards in policing, the concept of integrity, and the processes of challenging unprofessional conduct.
- Describe the development of the police in the modern context via critical analysis of the history, purpose and function of the police service; the principles of policing by consent; and the legal framework and regulation of the powers of police constables.
- Evaluate the police constable role in relation to crime-prevention models and principles based on effective problem-solving approaches.
- Explain Police Constables decision-making - for example understand and apply the National Decision Model (NDM), the use of discretion, and an awareness of the impact of bias on decision making.

Reflective coursework on development on OCP Students can choose to submit either a presentation OR a written essay. In your coursework you should provide a commentary on your overall experiences in year 1 with particular reference to the following:- a. Explain the key concepts learned in year 1 and how you have applied them in the workplace b. Provide a self evaluation of your performance so far (including discussion of work done during the tutor phase for the Occupational Competence Portfolio) c. Case example(s): Anonymised examples from your experiences on duty which demonstrate your development of good practice. There are two ways of completing this assessment. Writing a 2000 word essay OR Giving a 10-minute video presentation Presentations will be filmed by the student using Panopto software provided via myBangor or via the facility on Powerpoint to record presentations. Guidance on how to use Panopto is available in the assessment section on blackboard. Students must choose 1 approach to complete the assignment.
